Actor Jackie Chan attacked (not physically) for saying no need for freedom in China

Quote:

HONG KONG - Jackie Chan's comments that freedom may not be good for China were taken out of context, his spokesman said Tuesday, while Facebook users and Chinese scholars condemned the veteran actor on the Internet in a spreading backlash.

The 55-year-old star of the "Rush Hour" action comedies caused a huge uproar after he told a business forum on Saturday that it may not be good for authoritarian China to become a free society.

"I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said Saturday, adding freedoms in his native Hong Kong and Taiwan made those societies "chaotic."

wtf? how come society gets so mad when others express their own opinions?

Just like how Miss Cali lost her crown. There's always a "RIGHT" answer.

i kinda agree with what hes saying .... chinese people ...and i'm not saying all of them lack moral educated teaching (if u get what i mean  ... its not their fault tho .. its just they were brought up this way which turns them in to what they were now which probably was due to the hardships in the country for the last century .. since it was a pretty much you snooze you lose or a dog eat dog world and the poverty there... look at japan.. mannered, respectful and humble to people (not all too ofcourse) because that culture got a good manner norm that

I hate all the freedom talk with China. If you've actually been there you know it's like mostly capitalist unless you do really stupid shit like walking around saying free tibet. I know China has a lot of problems in the eyes of the western world, but letting them run free all of a sudden would be chaos. Everything takes time.

Ludepower 04-22-2009 03:29 PM

This thread is going to get nasty....in before the lock.

While Facebook users and Chinese scholars condemned the actors

When did the opinions of Facebook users and exiled chinese traitors count?

Capitalism under the cloak of the communism regime is the best way to implement western values in China.

either that, or communism under the cloak of Capitalism, which got the US in a huge pile of crap right now.

So far, the Chinese one literally owns the American one by trillions of dollar.

lol wut?

that does not make any sense

the thing i hate is when you are in china you can't say shit about government like we do here, oh sure you can talk about it at home that's fine, but you say shit about government or party leaders in the public you are a dead man lolz

chinese people will get really uncomfortable and give you weird looks if you start talking about human rights and freedom of speech & information.

I doubt whether any of you have actually been to China. last time I was in China was two years ago to visit a relative doing business there, (I'm Taiwanese), It is as free as it can be..

seriously, they couldnt careless you bad mouth the communist government or leaders, because words can't hurt..as long as you don't start burning tires or organize an uprising, theres no problem at all.

"free as it can be" so you're saying this is the best it can be?

No independent media? Internet that is guarded. Restricted sites. I don't know. Granted, they are far better off then say 20 years ago but still.

But OP, jackie chan is a DUMB ASS. Learn to speak intellectually when you're upon stage with BUSINESS leaders.

To be honest, I didnt' really feel "restricted" while browsing websites in China...

you can go to wikipedia (English), CNN, News website from Taiwan, Japan, etc, yahoo, google..or even porn sites. It's true if you try to type up sites that contain extreme violence or porn or fa lung gong then it will not be accessible, but overall I dont' find or feel it to be "restricted"

I also spoken freely about the communist and Taiwan's democratic government with the workers in my relative's company and seriously, theres no problem..even if you talk about communist and democracy in a Starbucks in Beijing, nobody really gives a damn.

You gotta give the Americans credit for painting China as a drepressed, restricted and evil country when it really is as capitalist as it can be.

oh wow. i actually have been to china when i was a child.
i've never been to darfur or zimbabewe but judging from news sources, i can call a shithole when i see a shitole

if the communist government really didn't care about people badmouthing the government, why did they have to have a application process for protests during the olympics?
you know tiananmen square was only 20 years ago?
