Drivers Licensing - Class 5 Road test.
 

I'm going for my road test this week, and have a few quick questions.

I've been told that you'e not allowed to shift gears going through an intersection. Is this an old myth or is it true?

I'm also taking my Civic that has a 6 puck, and a heavy duty pressure plate so the clutch has to be dragged a little bit, am I going to get in shit for that?

Any other things I should worry about, that they try and ding you on?

I am pretty sure the rule is you shouldn't shift in an interesction or when you are turning. when you come to a stop a red light or w/e make sure u keep it in first.

honestly man they r so nitpicky about how ur suposed to drive standard. just borrow an auto car like your moms car, or rent a car, or u can use a drivingschools one if u pay then like $50. it will make it so much easier on u

Yeah everyone's habits on stick are different but ICBC obviously wants to drive their certain way, so don't risk it and just borrow an auto.

I did my class 5 in a 5spd. *shrug* Just be aware of the road rules. Stop with it in 1st, clutch down. Don't shift through intersections or turns, easy on the acceleration, etc.

I'm going for mine soon too, will you fail if you go around someone that's turning left?

I'm RHD 5 speed so I DEFINITELY will not be taking my class 5 in it.

I'll be borrowing the dad's car, as should you! If you can make it easier for yourself, why not?

why would you -ever- drive a standard during a roadtest? do you have something to prove?

Im 20 for the guy who's asking. Both my parents drive trucks/suv in auto, but that'll probably be easiar. Thanks for the tips.

Some people don't have access to automatic cars. And some feel more comfortable in a manual transmission car. It all depends on the person.

i took mine in a 5spd and had zero problems. I asked my examiner what he preferred or expected before we started when he asks if you have questions. He told me that he didn't mind me being in neutral at a red light but you MUST be in gear otherwise. ie. no coasting around corners in neutral.

Just drive like a cop was following you the whole time. Follow the rules of the road. Easy on the gas and brake. Check your blindspots / mirrors often. Use your signals! Whatever you do do NOT palm the wheel. Two hands all the time, hand over hand on turns!

If you've been driving with your N for awhile you should have no problem.

For the week prior to my test i drove everyday like i was on my test for that week. I have a bad habit of one hand on the wheel one on my shifter so my practice week broke me of that.

Run some of your questions past your examiner and clarify what you are unsure of BEFORE you start. They won't answer anything once you've begun.

+1 Why make life harder on yourself.

How can an auto possibly be harder to drive than stick?

Its not that its harder or easier. I've been driving a 5spd since day one and HATE automatics.

In my case i would always take a 5spd over an auto for comfort and preference.

I didn't have access to an automatic car so took my class 5 in my standard back in april. The examiner said he was impressed with me cause rarely anyone takes their test in a 5speed. Maybe that's just up here but still don't be afraid, just drive properly and you'll be fine

Fair enough, but the OP is some n00b who obviously has some shifting issues, and is afraid of racking up demerits as a result. Why not just take that problem out of the equation?

It's like going into an exam with your favourite lucky pen which doesn't always write 100% of the time. Why risk it?

Just go with what you're comfortable with. Go practice over and over to build the confidence to take the test 5spd. I bet you feel like a million bucks when you pass. If you fail take it in stride to get better!

borrow an automatic car

i drive a 5 spd and when i took my class 5 i used my parents automatic CRV, like others have said why make it harder just go auto, less worries on rough shifts or rough 1st gear starts jus cruise with 2 hands on wheel and put it in "D" and your good2go

You should be fine with a 5spd as long as you know how to drive standard. When I took my class 5, I did it in a standard car and asked about the shifting in an intersection and what not and he basically told me that he wasn't testing me on my shifting and that he just wanted to see if I can obey the rules of the road.

I think it just comes down to who is the examiner is and how he feels about it. The test is a walk in the park though. I didn't even have to do any hazzard perception. :D

im about to do my class 5 and im going to use a corolla
nice and slow acceleration :D plus if the examiner is a big person i can't really speed since corollas have low hp

if you have access to a auto might as well go with that since its one less problem to worry about if you stall or bad shifting

When I got my Class 7 I used a Acura MDX the examiner was scared....lol but a standard car shouldn't be bad. Because when I got my class 5 I used a m3 with that stinking smg and it was pretty smooth. (it was the last minute thing I was going to use the MDX(my dad's) but he had to work so I used my cousin's car)

I know of a lot of people who did fail with a manual tho, simply ask the guy to see if it's okay to be in neutral @ stop lights <--- key

You passed Class 5 in a M3?! wow, maybe riding in a M3 made his day.

As for me, I'll be getting class 5 in October, and im taking my uncle's beater tercel to do it in. Ill pass for sure!
