ummm I think we only have the regular old hornets. only the US has superhornets.
I could be wrong.

only US navy has Superhornet, they are about 20-30% large in size, air intakes look different. they have hard corners as oppose to curved ones on cf-18, and if any of these jets go supersonic, near the city , ur windows will shatter!

they can go close to breaking supersonic in city limits, thats when u see the funnel cloud around the fuselage of the plane.

That is correct. The picture above also shows circular air intakes and a slimmer fuselage, indicating a F/A-18A/B/C/D Hornet, not a F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

Also, US military fighter jet aircraft are not permitted to go to mach speeds over North America during peacetime (except for some designated areas). I assume the same rule applies to Canadian aircraft. So what people are hearing is the still incredibly loud sound of sub-mach speed jet aircraft flying at low altitude.

RIGHT....INTO...THE......DANGERZONE

twitchyzero 08-12-2009 12:54 PM

i've seen the cf-18 fly past many times before but this week was the first time i've seen it fly over the city

Gumby 08-12-2009 01:17 PM

Damn, I missed them! :(

Once I was driving on Russ Baker and some sort of military jet flew overhead and landed at YVR. It was the loudest thing ever!

NORAD is doing training exercises with the Canadian forces. They talked about this 2 days ago on the news.

Harvey Specter 08-12-2009 03:15 PM

Yup, it's NORAD;

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - You may notice military planes overhead Wednesday and Thursday as NORAD spends some time in the sky in preparation for the 2010 Games. NORAD is conducting air security exercises in the skies over B.C and Washington State.

Restrictions during the Games include prohibitions on hot air balloons and model aircraft, with some regional airlines are being told to reroute their flights so passengers can be given adequate security screening. Securing the airspace above the 2010 Games requires both Canadian and U.S. efforts as the restricted zones cross the border. Military planes could be escorting other planes into and out of airports.
