I haven't played any video games for the last oh say 5 years.. So all you PS3 guys:

For $300, do you think this would be a decenty blue ray player? Slim or fat better? I know jack shit about gaming, but I do think the older version does look sleek. Much better than any other console.

But, if the slim is a better blue ray player, I'll grab that

there should be no difference in the playback ability of these two versions and yes $300 for a Blu-ray player + gaming console is a great deal.

I would, however, wait for some bundle deals to come out near x'mas time, since $299 is the "regular" price and discounts are bound to happen near the holiday season.

FYI I use my PS3 for games 50% of the time and for BD/DVD the other 50%.

StylinRed 08-20-2009 12:41 AM

There's already a PS3 slim bundle in Japan coming out its a Gundam bundle

twitchyzero 08-20-2009 01:07 AM

my tip for those on the fence is to wait for full hardware reviews that probably wont be around until mid september

dont rush buying one now..i doubt sony will keep the stock low
i think the best time to get it is at the end of oct when you get enough comparsion, probably 2nd mass shipment and right before the holiday rush

604778 08-20-2009 01:08 AM

Damn. I want one.

PS3 Slim is cheaper, yes, and new Cell processor makes it faster, maybe

If you've been on the fence with that new console purchase then maybe this bit of information will push you over. Not only is the $299 PS3 Slim a skinnier version than its fat bro, it also features a new upgraded Cell processor (jointly developed by IBM, Toshiba, and Sony), according to an IBM spokesman, that uses smaller, more efficient, and less costly 45-nm processes first hinted at back in February of 2008. IBM doesn't specify the clock speed. The 45-nm Cell is 34 percent smaller and requires 40% less power than the original 65-nm processor according to earlier accounts. Any changes to the graphics in the PS3 Slim are still unknown -- the GPU is simply listed as the NVIDIA RSX like the ol' chubster before it. Nevertheless, the IDG New Service says the PS3 Slim "adds hardware enhancements that make it speedier."

What's odd is that Sony didn't make any claims of the PS3 slim being faster at launch and the "boost" in processing speed in the IDG article quoting IBM doesn't seem to come from the IBM spokesman. As such, we're not sure if this is just an improvement in performance-per-watt or something the gamer will actually notice during play. We're still working on the review but rest assured, that's one question we're determined to answer.

underscore 08-20-2009 08:12 AM

^ if the slim is actually faster, not just faster per watt, don't expect to be able to find out til all the old fats are sold off.

Well the PS3 is already the best BluRay player you can get, and I doubt the BluRay playing abilities of the Slim are different from the Fat as they haven't said anything about a new drive. If you have an intense enough setup where you could notice small differences maybe wait until a teardown to see exactly what drive is in the new one. If you don't, pick up a Fat as you prefer the look and have a wicked 80GB media machine.

Mugen EvOlutioN 08-20-2009 11:16 AM

but but but newer is bettaaa

at least thats my mentality

PS3 Slim Bitstreams lossless codecs Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD MA

Slim PS3 Bitstreams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD

Posted August 21, 2009 03:10 AM by Juan Calonge

PlayStation 3 Without any fanfare or even a passing mention in its official announcement, the upcoming slim PS3 is getting an additional feature, one long requested by those who use the console as a Blu-ray player: it will be capable of bitstreaming DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD to a compatible receiver for it to decode those advanced audio signals.

This has been revealed by Engadget, quoting a story posted on Japanese electronics site AV Watch.

The regular PS3 can't bitstream advanced audio codecs because its HDMI transmitter chip doesn't support it. Therefore, unlike the addition of DTS-HD decoding or BD-Live support, a new firmware cannot add advanced audio bitstreaming to existing consoles.

It has been long argued that there is no difference between decoding an advanced audio signal on the player or on the receiver, provided they both follow the specification. However, many users insisted they wanted to decode in their receivers and were unhappy that the PS3 didn't offer them that option. Now, with the slim PS3, they can choose whether to decode in the console or in the receiver.

SkinnyPupp 08-21-2009 01:39 AM

Pretty pointless feature

StylinRed 08-21-2009 01:58 AM

yeah but people have been bitching about it ever since launch

they want to see their receiver say "Dolby TrueHD" and "DTS-HD MA" instead of MPCM

SkinnyPupp 08-21-2009 03:05 AM

I like how they put "it has long been argued". There is no argument to make. Once it's decoded, it's decoded. 1's and 0's will be identical, no matter what device was used to decode it. There is no such thing as a "better quality decoder". The data is always the same.

GRRRRR People are so fucking stupid sometimes.

hotjoint 08-21-2009 06:40 AM

where can we give feedback for PSN? I hate that we can't download and play games at the same time like xbox. No background downloading is gay.

StylinRed 08-21-2009 07:01 AM

^^^ i thought they changed that so you could... could swear i remember playing and downloading

a bunch of people with like $10s of thousands of dollars of equipment swear they can hear slight differences when their unit decodes it

same argument as analog outs for each channel instead of using hdmi

underscore 08-21-2009 08:26 AM

^ and the clowns that use still use tube amps. it always seems to be the people who love sound yet know absolutely nothing about the circuits behind it that make these claims.

MR_BIGGS 08-21-2009 09:07 AM
