RIP

I see Moms holding their kids by the wrist and jay walking everywhere i go, i really wish people would open their eyes at what they're doing and how dangerous the things they're doing really are. (This has nothing to do with what happened i just wish people were more Aware) Also where i live theres a huge park across the street and theres a pedestrian crossing and lights about 300m apart from each other and i still see kids jaywalking, HOW HARD IS IT TO WALK 150M EATHIR WAY TO A MORE SAFE CROSSING THEN JAYWALKING YOU'RE GOING THAT WAY ANYWAY.

Death2Theft 08-27-2009 07:24 PM

I dont know about you guys but as far as i know you can't turn right on that corner it's 1 way traffic.

dealt 08-27-2009 11:00 PM

so sad R.I.P.

Today when I was driving down on west 1st, a mid 20 year old girl holding a cake, "J-RUNS" across the street and doesn't bother looking both ways. Luckily I was going 40km/h (no cars were behind me) and had time to stop safely. The thing is, she continued running and didn't even look!!!

RIP to the little one

Let this be a reminder to all thoughs ppl who take right turns regardless of it being green OR red and not stopping at the line first at least on a red and makeing sure no ones crossing/ bike isn't coming up beside u ..and also for greens take the corner slower ..theres lots of stupid ppl that go and cross the street on a curved right turn where u can't see too far past the lines...its only a matter of time bfore someone takes the corner to fast without looking at the corner/ ahead of them and hit someone .. be careful everyone could be you or your child one day think about it

AzNightmare 08-28-2009 03:42 AM

This is pathetic. Can this be any more easier? Seriously.

Orange hand signal means don't cross. White man signal means, cross.

Red light means stop. Green light means Go.

Turn when there is no one crossing the street.

Not rocket science. But so many people apparently make it so.

tegz 08-28-2009 03:45 AM

Well a quote from the article at the Province says: ""The [woman] had the walk sign and pushed off and the truck tried to make a wide turn and hit the carriage," said Fawcett."

So the pedestrians had the right of way and the truck made a right turn into the baby I guess.

Hey folks - just thought I'd give my assement of the situation.

I personally live the area and was able to witness the after affects of the incident. I saw the police spokeswomen giving the general interview and could tell from her tone that it wasn't good. The overall mode at the scene was pretty mellow they were covering the accident scenes with drapes and had the firetruck crew to come and clean it up.

Personally I feel very bad for everyone involved - the little child, mother, emergency crew, police, all the eye witnesses and maybe even the driver. No one wanted such a thing to happen but it did and lets just say it really does have affects on people's lives.

A few of my rants given the situation.

- Given the situation, I mean we had over 4-5 years of construction and this is one of the few major accidents. It;s almost a blessing in a bad way that more accidents didn't happen.
- The whole Keefer and Abbott area is a gong show. I personally live in that area for the last year and most of the sidewalk would be always blocked off cause they are continously doing shit at the Espana development. Its just tragic that an accident like this had to happen near the completion of the building. Personally I think that the development company should be somewhat liable - they could have put more signs up or done something to slow down traffic and detour people from walking on the side of the streets which may or may not had a cause to the traffic.
- People in Vancouver should take extra caution when crossing the road. It almost feels like there is an ingrained behavior that pedestrians always have the right of way. Its not true - cause last I checked even if you have the right of way, you won't outlast getting hit/smashed by a car. Just remember to double/triple check when crossing the street cause you can never be too sure.

In this case with all the news reports, we really don't know what happened. But so far the indications looked like the flatbed truck driver was trying to make a wide turn and hit/clipped the baby carriage and the women.

The police actually confiscated the secured video surveillance from all the buildings around that corner. Maybe then we would know what truly happened.

But in the end RIP to the little girl, the mother, family and friends and all that is affected.

Unfortunately that's one of the byproducts of living in a region of car-culture. When you drive as much as the average guy; 5 days to & fro occupational commute and reacreationally on weekends. Plus the fact that most of the population is now being pushed to reside from complete differing cities from that which they work, I can totally see why cautiousness and due diligence decline in eventuality as a driver matures.

Something's gotta change.

Did anyone see the article in today's Sun?

Apparently this guy has diabetes and is having his medication "adjusted" to deal with it. He was employed at Via Rail years ago and they tried to fire him for falling asleep on the job twice. The arbitrator said they couldn't fire him because it was the diabetes which caused him to fall asleep.

WTF?

LOL a lot of hate for Vancouver, you should move to Surrey! You'll fit right in with all the F150 driving meatheads there.

I'll quote two parts i agree with.

Local residents say the intersection has been dangerous for pedestrians ever since construction to repair the sidewalk began two weeks ago.

Rejoice Kryzanowski told CBC News the repair work has forced her to walk out into traffic when crossing the street.

"Every day I'm crossing the street, the same thing happens. For two weeks I'm like, 'Oh my God, it could be me, oh my God it could be me.' And there is no reason for it," she said

What I'm sure is a gesture of courtesy is in fact a nuisance as well as a potentially dangerous habit, especially when there are numerous parallel live traffic lanes on either side of a lane of stopped traffic. If a driver waves me on to cross in front of his car I simply ignore them and wait until the road is empty to cross.

I'm not sure how similar this is to the case at hand, but the overly courteous driving habits can sometimes be as dangerous as careless driving.

I am totally the person that waves people across the street even if i have the right of way, but it has always irked me when punk ass kids or nalgene bottle holding tree huggers think they own the streets and cross without checking left and right. Bikers are sometimes just as bad.

IF everyone drivers and pedestrians went about their business like nobody gave a fuck about their "rights" then i think everyone would be better off. People would drive more carefully, and pedestrians would cross more carefully.

RIP little one.

wtf does this have to do with anything.

I would have said the same if a white girl and her white baby got toasted by a Japanese drifting AE86 moron.

no kidding
a lot of impatient drivers out there. Twice today I got honked by 2 ppl at different areas where I was trying to turn right but either my view was obstructed or when it was not safe to turn right on red because of pedestrians/cars. Nothing a flipping of the bird and some profanity can't cure though.
impatient assholes these days.

WOW at the lack of respect some people have on such a sad and traumatic incident. Leave the jokes, stereotypes and finger pointing in Fight Club.
