Young child hit and killed while crossing Vancouver downtown street

RIP

Quote:

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Witnesses like the construction workers across the street are being offered counselling after what is being described as a graphic accident. The 32-year-old woman pushing her two-year-old in a stroller had been crossing Expo Boulevard at Abbott Street when a white flatbed truck turning right struck the pair.

Constable Jana McGuinness with the Vancouver Police Department says the young child was dead almost immediately. The mother has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. "There are few incidents more tragic than the loss of a child and our deepest sympathies go out to the family and everyone affected by this today."

The driver has been taken by police and is cooperating in the investigation.

RIP little one.

Harsh reminder - LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING THE STREET.

You NEVER KNOW if the vehicle is going to stop for you!

Actually, the lesson learned here is NEVER STAND RIGHT AT THE CORNER when waiting to cross. My dad ALWAYS taught my sisters and I to stand at least 2-3m back. Trucks and semis turning right hop onto the curbs all the time! To be honest I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often with all the retarded "righteous" pedestrians all over this hippie-town.

RIP.

That is so sad...especially I was on the other thread about yielding to pedestrians and joking about hitting them. :(

They were crossing the street, not standing on the corner. If the truck was turning right and the driver was arrested, that means he didn't stop for them to finish crossing.

No parent will ever recover from seeing their own baby run over like that.

RIP to the little one :(

Tow truck drivers are as careless as cab drivers. You should some of these idiots hauling ass during rush hour with no care in the world for other drivers or pedestrians.

ilvtofu 08-26-2009 05:34 PM

Unfortunately, looking both ways before crossing won't do jack in this situation.

You have to look behind you (as that truck was making a right on "green") in order to tell that a vehicle is coming.

this.

pandalove 08-26-2009 05:43 PM

RIP tragic

but to be honest there is a problem with pedestrians in vancouver... they dun look before crossing the street they act like the cars can stop in time for them and its their right like they own the street

if they walked like that in hk ... hit them 9 generations ago

still RIP

InvisibleSoul 08-26-2009 05:50 PM

I saw something similar to this just a few days ago... forgot where I was, but same deal... a big truck turning right was literally within a couple meters from hitting a mother and young daughter standing on the sidewalk.

jimzilla 08-26-2009 06:12 PM

RIP baby

Might seem careless to you, but when you work that job, time is money, and no truck driver is gonna sit around and wait for the idiots around him to get moving. Most truckers are better drivers than most commuters on the road.

rip

Nvasion 08-26-2009 06:24 PM

RIP. i know its very sad but i always see people crossing the street before looking for cars... they just look down or straight ahead and dont even care about the incomings.
