wow,... just some questions...

I see the stores in canada selling them as a kit with;
18-135 lens

but in the states they are
28-135 lens

is the release different in canada vs usa?

Senna4ever 09-29-2009 04:34 PM

Must be a typo...28mm on a crop body isn't wide enough. The 7D kits won't be coming in for a while.

ya, thought so too, but in the pictures on the lens is actually written 28-135, and some pictures are written 18-135... photoshopped?

The AF on this camera really makes it interesting for me since i like to do alot of bird photography and nature. I'm assuming this would be a good upgrade from a 40D in that regard? How much better is the AF on a 1D body than the 7D? I was thinking the 7D, a 1.4X, and a 500mm F4IS would be a pretty good birding/nature combo. Would love to get a 1D MKIII tho. Input?

Senna4ever 09-29-2009 08:52 PM

So I used a 7D today after work. It is a bit noisier than the 5DmkII, but the banding of the noise has been eliminated. AF seems to be accurate (we put a 24mm f1.4 on it), but probably doesn't come close to a 1Ds mkIII in speed. Metering seems to be good, too. I don't think you'd need to put a 1.4x extender if you're using a 500mm f4.

How does the AF compare to the Nikon D300s? I would assume that the Nikon should still be better since it has the D3/D3x/D700's AF module in there.

I assume the AF is not as good as the Nikons, but it's pretty quick. I am testing it out tonight, and I just got back from taking some night shots with the 7D, so I'll try to post some pics later. I'm going to head out again for some shots. The noise is much nicer looking than the 5DmkII - much easier to get rid of with noise reduction. Dare I say Nikon-like?

I was at Broadway Camera yesterday (Broadway location) and they have the 7D body in stock. I played with it briefly and it does feel a tiny bit heavier than my 50D.

Very nice camera though..but the body is selling for $2100 CAD before taxes....ouch!

$1699usd x exchange rate south of the border
$2099cdn + 12% tax in Canada

easily save $400-$500 in the states....

dilemma,... hmm

ps: as previously mentioned,.. the 28-135 is showing up on all US websites, but the 18-135 is showing up on all canadian websites... reason behind this?

yup, definately cheaper, and you don't get charged duty for camera stuff either. however, i would be worried about a warranty...just incase.

still waiting to see reviews on the 18-135. sounds like it could be a great walk around range

really?? there's not duty on cam stuff? Warranty works the same, cuz you ship it to Canon canada, they cover stuff bought in the US

hoking 10-01-2009 04:46 PM

^^^
no duties for photography equipment, but you still need to pay gst/pst ONLY if you declare at the border :)

I bought a lens in the US before (canon 17-85mm) cost me 400 in total to pay some border tax... at that time it was selling for $700 canadian with taxes.

IMO makes a lot of sence to buy the camera in the US

the noise on the 7D at ISO 6400 is better than my XTI at ISO 800
