Maybe rent one for the weekend to see if you like it? Don't read too much into internet reviews...get the one that is right for you. It's pretty cheap, about $25/day, and your rental costs can go towards a purchase, I think. The guys at Provision are really nice people, and they know their stuff.

If the T1i is anything like the 50D, then the 7D will be an improvement at ISO 800+, but I'm not sure if it's worth $1000. Personally, I'd get the Tokina.

ok thnx. maybe i'll wait till the 7D prices come down, but then the t1i price will come down lol

A co-worker has written a mind-numbingly thorough review of the 7D & 15-85mm.

I just checked Vistek, and they're selling the RODE mic I saw at Provision for $439, so I guess I was wrong. It must be around that price. No experience using it - I went to Provision to inquire about the various mics they have that can be mounted on a DSLR and they recommended me that one and a few others.

The other one they showed me:

I called provideovision and got some weird answers. First guy tells me it's 289, called again later and another guy tells me its 399??

I've done a lot of research this week on audio and microphones (more than a healthy amount) and I have narrowed down the choices to the following:
1) Rode (mono) videomic - good for dialogue and drowning out ambience
2) Rod stereo videomic - good for music, live performance, ambience sounds
3) Zoom H4N field recorder (not a microphone) - records stereo and can be placed next to the sound source to record audio separately and then syncing with video in post-edit. Also read that can attach a cord from the line-out to the mic input on the camera and get a direct recording so negating the need to sync the audio.

I think 3) is the best choice as you get the best of both worlds: place the recorder next to the sound source for dialogue and limiting ambience or plug it to the camera to record live performances, etc...

In terms of cost, 3) is the most expensive, then 2), then 1)....the Zoom H4N is about $400 CDN or $300 US
