Maybe rent one for the weekend to see if you like it? Don't read too much into internet reviews...get the one that is right for you. It's pretty cheap, about $25/day, and your rental costs can go towards a purchase, I think. The guys at Provision are really nice people, and they know their stuff. |

I've done a lot of research this week on audio and microphones (more than a healthy amount) and I have narrowed down the choices to the following: 1) Rode (mono) videomic - good for dialogue and drowning out ambience 2) Rod stereo videomic - good for music, live performance, ambience sounds 3) Zoom H4N field recorder (not a microphone) - records stereo and can be placed next to the sound source to record audio separately and then syncing with video in post-edit. Also read that can attach a cord from the line-out to the mic input on the camera and get a direct recording so negating the need to sync the audio. I think 3) is the best choice as you get the best of both worlds: place the recorder next to the sound source for dialogue and limiting ambience or plug it to the camera to record live performances, etc... In terms of cost, 3) is the most expensive, then 2), then 1)....the Zoom H4N is about $400 CDN or $300 US |
