my friend who works there says theres soo many dumb ass people that have been with the company for 10 + years who make $35 + / hr where they could have easily have gotten a SFU, UBC co-op student to do the exact work for $14/hr.

Honestly, 20% of the employees do 80% of the work for them. The others just work half-ass.

I'm pretty sure they're looking to shop that bridge to Macquarrie bank who will slap tolls on it the same day the deal closes.

yup

i worked for a crown corporation that was unionized one summer

the section i worked in dealt solely with products that employees would fuck up on the machines... I would have to go through all of them by hand piece by piece....annually it costs the company 300,000 grand to operate this section.... i got paid $25/hr to do this for half the day, the other half i spent pressing a few buttons operating a machine

its funny because a lot of the employees there were in their 60s and dozing off / reading newspapers/magazines and shit while working the machines, its easy stuff... all you have to do is pay attention and you won't fuck up but they still manage to, many of them earning $40/hr+ benefits

The Knight Street bridge may have had adequate capacity when it was built around 1970, but it needs to be doubled in size right now to come close to meeting capacity. But of course there's no timetable for that in the next 30 years..

About the golden ears bridge and the NEW port mann: Like others have said, the toll is understandable to pay for it. Plus, the Golden Ears is built over capacity. 6 lanes for about 30000 vehicles a day vs the Knight St bridge at 4 lanes for over 60000 vehicles a day. Tolling the Knight Street bridge is crazy.

Perhaps people should have actually looked into what wages/administrative costs actually mean in the grand scheme of things...

Administrative costs (i.e. wages, etc.) account for a rather small portion of Translink's budget. According to Translink's 2008 report, administrative costs were in the neighbourhood of $39 million, out $1 billion in total expenditures. Even if you cut wages in half, it still won't amount to much. Really, would you drive a bus for $15/hour and have people spit in your face? Probably not...

But, if you've taken the Canada Line, you will notice that a private company is running things. So, Translink is listening (sorta.)

I took the skytrain to work and only buy the one zone faire(need 2 zone). The only reason I actually pay is coz I also take the bus, otherwise I wouldn't pay a penny. I work for 2years and never ever seen anyone check for tickets(during rush hours they never check tickets).

I would pay if the system is better. Just look at moring(8 to 9:30am) and eveings(4:30pm to 5:40pm). The skytrain is fill with ppl and lot's of time ppl can't even get on, they have to wait at the stations for a good 10 to 15mins before they find a skytran that have enough room for them. I took the longer route to work(have to get up 20mins ealiers) to ensure I am not late for work but yet every week they skytrain much fuck up. What they need is more skytrain running(every 1 to 2mins for a new skytran during rush hours) and have more bus running and run later hours.

Just today when I got off work I have wait 3 skytrain to find a spot. If transitlink more ppl to use thier service they have to make it relible.

There are 2 ppl in my work place who never ever buy a bus ticket for the last few years and never been caught. They have the same reason as me, Once transitlink start to put thier shit together we will start supporting them.

i thought the VPD was tolling the knight street bridge in their own way already?!

If they are going to do this they better be adding a few lanes on each side... that bridge is a mess! So is the oak street bridge.

Translink is operated by a bunch of morons that have no concept of a budget. They already get 600+ million in tax/levy/fee revenue on your gasoline, natural gas, property tax etc etc... and only 300 million from fares... Translink needs to be run like a business and not like a rich kid with an unlimited budget... You can't keep charging and not improving transit service and roads...

A few ideas... kill the road transit police... they are USELESS... pop in turnstyles... change the fare system... And farm out all the major infrastructure projects to private companies... and KILL THE UNIONS... they lower productivity because there is no incentive to work harder...

Why was the golden earns bridge and the canada line finished early? Public/Private Partnership... Private money = efficient money...

just be like japan, toll every bridge and every section of the highway.

it actually cost 2-3 times more driving from tokyo to osaka (6-8 hours) than to take the bullet train (2 hours, 10,000 yen) or plane (1 hour, 20,000 yen)

they purposely set the finish date for the canada line to be far past the actual day it would be completed. it's a PR move to make the project look good. everyone expects that a project will get delayed not finish before a deadline.

let's not forget here, they've already said they are looking for ways to maintain current service levels. which means we're paying for skytrain, buses, and canada line EVEN if we're not using it. personally i think the people who use the service should pay for the service. ie, hike up those damn fares. we who drive pay enough already with insurance, gas and maintenance. why should i have to pay for other peoples choice to not drive?

also, there was that $600,000 settlement translink had to pay for that one cambie street business owner! they are appealing but imagine the kind of precedent that sets for the other owners who are in the crapper because of the canada line construction!

Why are you people so heated up anyways? If you live in Richmond, that means you like living there and spend most of your time there anyway. Why do people choose to live in one city then spend 100's of hours every year driving to other cities? LOL

I like your logic.

That way, all bridges should have a toll as well. Since I live in Vancouver and have no reason to venture into the suburbs I shouldn't have to subsidize all the suberbanites who drive to Vancouver for work everyday either!

Vancouver and Richmond are separated by less than a kilometer of river, therefore Richmond pretty much IS the same city as Vancouver.

When I think of Vancouver I think of the whole greater vancouver area: Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, North Van, New West. They may have different municipal governments but they really just make up one big city.
