Powered by parents?

Lets sort this out, why the dislike for those people who have nice cars bought by their parents? I thought we are all a bunch of car enthuisast, however after reading through some of the recent threads, it seems like thats not the case for the majority of RevScene members.

Personally I have nothing against anyone who was given a nice car or someone hardworking who earned their car. I believe we should look past the fact that someone didn't "earn" their car and behave like true car enthuisast.

On the other hand I also highly admire individuals with hardworking ethics that have managed to purchase their own car with their own saved up money, be it a domestics, import, or euro.

I strongly believe there is no reason for all the disagreements and arguments that arise from these scenarios, why can't we all just get along and ejoy these beautiful machines side by side, be it a Honda Civic EG or a Ferrari F430?

Lets resolve our differences and behave like true car enthuisast and look past our differences.:)

I have respect for hardworking individuals that buy and pay for everything to do with their cars, even if they don't quite drive the best car out there.

On the other hand I have no respect for slacking kids who get their parents to buy them a nice 50K+ car and rip it around town like they own the road. (Ha, Richmond.)

I also have respect for those that work hard and accept gifts from their parents (in the form of a car). There is one point that I'm trying to make and that is the fact of whether they deserve it or not. Not all of us were lucky enough to be born into a wealthy family, and have everything breastfed to us.

By the way, I don't have anything against the car itself, just the "Powered By Parents" Owner of it.

Ppl get aggressive when their pride gets hurt. Blame it on the media and the materialistic girls. I believe ppl get along fine UNTIL 1 of them gain an advantage over another, in this case a nice car. The disadvantaged party will try to level the playing field by finding ways to one-up the advantaged party. This is where the conflict starts.

Jealousy is a part of it. Don't tell me that u'r not jealous of the guy who se parent bought him a nicer car. If u'r really not jealous, u won't care and the whole work hard vs powered by parent conflict will not even start.

Its a culture difference. North American people tend to value making it on your own. Kick the kids out at 18, let them get real jobs, and learn the value of hard work and earning money for yourself.

Asian people believe in giving their children a step-up in life. Buy them a nice car, that is safe, so they can get around without any hassle, get them through school, and in return, Asian children tend to take care of their parents in the future. It is more about family, and giving their children the best they can afford.

Haters are people who just do not understand or try not to understand cultural differences. The word for it being ignorance.

mpr 10-14-2009 11:47 AM

Yo. I'll beat down the lambo too. Have you seen my megan stickers!!

The thing is, not all Asian families can afford a nice safe car for their children, some kids gotta work for it.

I agree that the mentality and attitude of drivers do make a large impact on how the car is viewed upon, but not all powered by parents drivers are lazy slackers, just like not all of those who bought their own cars are the nicest, most generous. I believe we need to know more about the individual before making assumptions as to what type of person they are. But then again thats impossible in real life.

All I am saying is that maybe it's better to think twice before commenting instead of making assumptions.

!SG 10-14-2009 11:50 AM

the issue can be viewed from both sides of the fence.

the arguement against is some rich kids look down upon anyone that wasnt given a helping hand in life. we call this attitude being snobby. this has been a huge growing trend amongst the young neaveau riche of china that are living abroad.

This subject has been beat to shit for like a decade.

I don't have a problem with parents buying their kids nice cars if they earned it. Never happen to me in my lifetime tho cuz my parents were not loaded when I was younger.

Guys know that a car makes somewhat of a statement. You have a nice car lets say like a new 3 series and the other dude has like a fuck i duno a 98 integra gs or something. The only problem I would have is if the dude in the bmw somehow thought he was better than the guy who paid for his integra himself. Or if he obtained some kind of ego. I don't know many ppl who had their parents buy them a car but I would probably laugh if I heard someone was bragging about their car to make them feel better even tho they didnt put a penny down on it themselves. However, I don't think this happens normally though (well i would hope not). I am sure kids who are given cars for whatever reason are more humble about it than anything. At least I would be.

EXACTLY.... This happens too much. That's what made me have prejudice against young kids in expensive cars in the first place. Yes I know some of them earned it by working hard in school and whatever, but I guess that created a stereotype for me.

if my parents had there way. id be driving a volvo (like every asian parents dream). safe and built like a bloody tank!

to fight for freedom, you have to fight to stand on ur own 2 feet.

Well, to be fair, I'm one of those kids back in the days (e46 330 when it was still new) and I never really bring it up. I think it made me even more humble than before. When ppl ask me wut I have, I'll just say it's a silver sedan. I really dun feel I'm any superior or anything. I definitely dun feel inferior when someone else has a Porsche.

Nothing wrong with being spoiled. It just a douche multiplier.
It's the attitude more than anything.
arrogance, driving behavior, maturity and appreciation for other motorists all matter more in my eyes.

oh and the false sense of independence it perpetuates.

ienhz 10-14-2009 12:07 PM

All those hongers worked hard to get their high school diplomas in Richmond. I think they deserve at least a BMW.

I partially agree with you on this one. I have no respect for slacking kids who GET their parents to buy them nice cars. In other words, the parents didn't offer to give the kid a car, but the kid got one because of sweat talk or whatever method. However, I have no issue with them ripping the car up as long as they are only putting themselves in danger. So it's fine if they want to rip it on a track or at Antartica.

I disagree with you on this one. It seems (this is just a guess) like you're just jealous that some are more lucky than you. I think it's fine if their parents are willing to give a car to their kid without having the kid to mention anything to them in the first place.
In fact, I'll buy my kid a car too when I see him/her working really hard around the house and at school. And when i do buy a car for my kid, I would not want ppl to judge my kid base on what I've done. Because if I want my kid to accept my gift, I will make sure they accept my gift even though he/she doesn't want to. I have my chinese ways to doing things.

I partially agree with you. I would never have anything against any car except for hybrids. However; it would reallly depend on how and why the kid is powered by his/her parents. Also, I would depend on how the kid react back to his/her parents.

I agree cultural differences play its part in this.
But one's gotta remember that there's cultural differences, then there's plain spoiled and conceited 18 year olds who are either high school drop outs or people who gave no shit about school and graduated with near F average for the sake of graduating, driving a high end car with a 3000$ body kit working at MacDonalds while all his friends who dont have rich parents and nice cars or even those who do (whether asian or not) are working their butts off either at college or an actual job. Or both.
/run-on

When it comes down to that, it's rarely a case of ignorance and jealousy on the observer's part.

Like most ppl said, I applaud those who earned their veihicles whether they bought themselves or gift from family, just the latter described above of teens who got a 50K car because their family's got the cash and are at "that driving age", then the kid drives it flaunting their high and mighty status i can't accept.

clowe 10-14-2009 12:30 PM

If they're driving respectfully on the road and not giving other drivers cocky stares cause they're driving a nicer and faster car than the other person, I have nothing against the other kids that have cars bought by their parents.

If my parents ever offered to me buy a BMW, for sure I wouldn't be turning it down :p ...but its not going to happen :(
