even if we win the stanley cup, the celebration will be nowhere near what it was during the olympics, especially on the last day
but i'd say the intensity would be similar, for me a canucks stanley cup is bigger than olympic gold, but for most people its probably not because the majority of the people out and about when we won gold are only casual hockey fans

Id say alot of Vancouver Hockey enthusiasts are Bandwagon Supporters.
Only watch the Stanley cup games, never the regular season. Which was a habit of only a few games a year. Vancouver is now 4th in the league overall. So we should see them hitting the bars soon shouting Go Canucks Go not knowing a single players name besides Kariya, Bure, Linden, Ronning, Mogilny, Messier, Potvin.... Oh wait. they dont play anymore..... Where have I been???? lol

exactly this
some of them aren't even casual hockey fans, just olympic fans that were also canada fans (another gold, another celebration)
and most of you guys know how I feel about them bandwagoners/casual fans sometimes.
Sadly, those are the fans that will do one of the two
1. Ruin the experience
2. Throw an even bigger party than Hockey Gold
In reality, this is how it works, local sports team does well, more coverage and publicity will be sent out. Aside from the wagonfucks and casual fans that seldom follow the canucks, there will be even more people tuning in to see whats up around the city. This is what we call the media at work.
In most cases, i dont care what the wagonfucks do, but I seem to be the shit starter when it comes to bandwagoners since they piss me off by doing exactly what Tony Gallager does, praise when well, shit bricks to the wall when they suck.
Its the tame casual fun bunch that makes the party fun for everyone.

ugh, please don't bring up that sad excuse for a reporter's name again -- ESPECIALLY in this epic olympic thread.

no, i think the crowd will be very simliar minus the canadians from other provinces.
one thing i know tho, surrey scott road will be packed as hell ...
the crowd, maybe
the crowd size, no
the crowd atmosphere, no
i know firsthand that a lot of people that were in downtown on that final day weren't hockey fans (my friends), but team canada fans
i'm going out on the limb here and saying that we'll never see another day like the day(s) we saw during the olympics. maybe i'm wrong, maybe i'm right. but i hope i'm wrong

I dunno - I'd be freaking stoked if/when the Canucks win a stanley cup, but the fact that Team Canada won Olympic Gold in Vancouver makes it all that more special.
In theory, the Canucks have a chance to win the cup every year, whereas the Winter Olympics only happens every 4 years, and in a different city each time. What are the chances that we'll see Team Canada play in an Olympic gold medal ice hockey game in Vancouver again? Pretty unlikely, at least in our lifetime.
As a side note, think of how many stars had to be aligned for Luongo to win gold in his home rink:
-Vancouver is chosen for the 2010 Winter Olympics
-Luongo plays for the Vancouver Canucks
-Luongo is chosen to play for Team Canada
-Brodeur messes up (but only during the qualification rounds, fortunately)
-Luongo and team make it to the finals
-Luongo and team win the final (in OT to boot)

It all goes back to how current events around the city are covered. Especially with the canucks. The mediums of Vancouver will write on how the city will breathe, eat , sleep all things Vancouver Canucks, that will bring out fans. Believe me, it will. Its all how media work
at the same time, celebrations will still be there, just not as concentrated in the DT core. When there are giant screens for some odd 12000-15000 to watch within proximity of GM place like the gold game, then you will see the outpour of celebrations.
I will be in downtown waiting, becuz to be honest, those same people that packed robson during the gold win will be the same crowd that will show up when the canucks win the cup. The same crowd that will actually stand around and wave flags.

pretty much sums up how i feel too. the only thing better, is if luongo was born in vancouver :P

Geez, if he was ALSO born in Vancouver, the chances of that happening is like winning the jackpot lottery, twice!

So I went in to work yesterday to see the Olympic Ring barge tied up and getting retrofitted with the Paralympic logo. All they're doing is sticking the new logo, centred in front of the rings. Looks kind of ghetto.

Even if the Canucks make a deep run into the playoffs, you won't see the large crowds we had during the Olympics because streets won't be shut down (perhaps Robson might be shut down as it was during the '94 run.) Instead, we will see medium-sized crowds downtown, in Surrey, and in the Fraser Valley.
The cold reality is that we will never see huge crowds at the Robson and Granville intersection ever again. At least I have the memory of walking through that crowd shortly after our gold medal win. And it was worth every penny of my tax dollars.
