Hmm I've got a few questions I'm hoping some of you Van locals can help answer for me regarding the olympics... I'm not sure if I'll get any answers posting so far back in this thread but I'll try before starting a new one.

Anyways... for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, I know that they took extra measures like installing fencing around the Calderon and RCMP requesting liquor stores close early to manage the crowds or whatever. Can anyone recall if other things were put in place to this effect (security/crowd control)? Road blocks, parking, or closed buildings? Could you distinguish the spectator crowd from say.. event volunteers? security? media? and how did the public/everyone find out about these extra steps taken? did they broadcast it on the news/radio or something? or was it a "figure it out yourself" kinda deal? Thanks in advance!!!

- there were parking restrictions and some roads were closed off for cars.
- volunteers were wearing their uniform and all workers/volunteers were wearing ID around their neck.
- it was noted in the news

from wat i recall, the Olympics brang out a really friendly enviroment, everyone was friendly, no one really complained about anything other than peoples liqour being poured out on the street. Volunteers were easily distinguishable, usually they were wearing blue i believe. Downtown had alot of traffic and if u were dumb enough to drive down there, it was a problem for u. Alot of people used the skytrain.

And unless u were living under a rock, its pretty easy to figure out wat was going on, via TV, Radio, or word of mouth type thing

When the Canucks win the Stanley cup it might come close but I don't think anything can top us winning the gold in OT.

really? I know since its the Olympics, the stage is bigger than the Stanley Cup Finals. But I wished Canada to win gold in Vancouver when the Olympics came here for like a year. Ive been wishing Canucks would win the cup for 18 years. To Myself the Cup means more than Olympic Gold. And id probably ball like a baby if the Canucks ever won it.

when the canucks win the cup, I will have to explode and do something really out of the ordinary.

Maybe tattoo a small canucks logo on a hidden part of my body..

Bump.

I know it's not exactly a year later (yet), but I came across some neat footage tonight from the Canada v. USA Gold game. It's a simply camera pointed across False Creek at Vancouver, intended to capture the sounds from DT. Fast forward to roughly 1:13 and listen to how loud the city became.

Also Olympic related:

I even miss that fucking stupid "I Believe" song CTV played every chance they got:

I know it wont compare to being in my home country (hell, my home city), but I've already got cash saved to go check out the Winter Olympics in Sochi. I'm sadly hooked.

The one year anniversary of the greatest winter Olympic games in the history of the games is upon us and the city has planned a grand celebration for February 12th, which happens to fall on a Saturday so you don’t have to skip out on work or school. Here is what the city has planned for that day.

The City of Vancouver will be working with the Downtown Vancouver BIA to throw a street party on Granville and Robson. Partners involved are being worked out right now, but it’s looking pretty sweet. The concept is that it will be a sampler of the best things about the Olympics.

Olympic Glory Relived on Granville Street: From Noon to 9pm Granville Street from Smithe to Dunsmuir will be closed off to traffic for the following:

They’re planning on having the best buskers, and street hockey, but are also currently working on getting the rights to project onto the walls of the buildings – Twitter Feeds to a specific Hash Tag, a Collection of People’s Olympic Photos, and sports footage.
The Mint will be having the medals on site. People will need to make a reservation to view and take a photo with the medals online and that will be announced soon.
LunarFest 2011:

This beautiful Winter Games legacy event on the grounds of the Vancouver Art Gallery will run from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. through Feb. 13.
Illuminate Yaletown 2011

Yaletown will be having their 2nd annual Illuminaries Light Festival.
The Province will have activations at Robson Square with musical performances yet to be announced. Four Host First Nations will be there

Also:

Return of the Flash Mobs.
A @DowntownVan event will run from 12-9. but this may change depending on our partners.
They will be lighting the Torch at Jack Poole Plaza. Right now it’s scheduled for 4pm with dignitaries.
The VAG will be open that day and FREE, just like during the Olympics.
Creekside Community Recreation Centre:

Free family-friendly community event in the Creekside gymnasium from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The event will feature a range of Olympic and Paralympic themed activities including a hockey sledge race, winter sports on Wii, pin trading, 2010 memorabilia on display and a big-screen TV showing Games highlights. Organized by Vancouver Parks and Recreation.
