What a fucking tragedy.

The mom was a cancer survivor.
The daughter was about to graduate as a nurse.

would the speedo on the bmw be frozen at the last speed? would it be recorded in the "black box"?

regardless, for a car to split a minivan into two it couldn't have been doing the speed limit
My guess is they got that number from the accident investigators.

i believe in newer BMWs mechanics can hook up the car (or whats left of it) to their computer system and analyze what speed the car was travelling at, so that they know if someone was doing crazy stuff with the car before it needed service.

The car that was involved was a later model e39. There is no black box. In fact the OBC doesn't store anything before.. everything is instantaneous.. so if the car is powered off the data is gone.

The way they do it is to do an accident reconstruction. You need quite a bit of force to shear the van apart.. even if it is a first gen Odyssey... You do a rough calculation base on the mass of both vehicles etc.

200kph is roughly 125mph.. which is not a lot.

Only a few ROOGP are left on RS as most of the ROOGP got fed up of the BS that the new breed of Post Whores are putting up in here.

The witnesses happened to be 2 Cops who were just about to go after it because of the speed involved. As far as what cars have in them that will allow data to be captured & retained, it differs with make & models. Even cars like cavaliers have data that can be retrieved that can tell what gear it was in, what speed, what belts were fastened etc. The speeds can also be determined by the severity of damage, skidmarks, there may be needle slap from the speedo/tach etc.

You just watched Law Abiding Citizen didn't you?

Can anyone find more pictures of the 5-series? I want to see how the front looks like. From the back, it doesn't seem that bad at all, despite being in an accident at 200kmh.
