why businesses don't take credit cards?

Why do some businesses take CC and some dont? For heaven sake, we are in 2010, who the hell keeps a stack of cash in their back pockets? Even my local post office won't accept credit cards. This is so inconvenient and backwards imo.

I can think of two reasons:

1) The business doesn't want to pay credit card companies to use their services.

2) The credit card company doesn't want to do business with that particular business (bad credit history, shady business owner, could be anything).

To keep it of the books so they don't pay taxes.

Goddamn, I hate when I'm working and the customer either:

A) Complains that his cc is not working because we(the store) chose not to accept his cc and that we dont want to pay fees and taxes. Even though everyone elses cc is working before and after his attempt.

and/or

B) When a customer slips cash to me, while at the checkout trying to buy an item and wanting a small discount on regular price as well as not paying for taxes etc. Just cause they assume that since we are Asian running an all Asian store that we rather take cash so avoid taxes so its win-win for both of us. Then when I say no, cash or cc, it makes no difference to us how you pay but you are paying the regular price + taxes. Then they go on about how we(the store) could use the extra money with no fees since we are the "working class" and are poor people.

For the last guy I threw his money at him and told him to get the fuck out. And yes, they were white.

There's enough Asian food places that charge one price for people who speak English, and another lower price for those who speak their language.

I'm not surprised more english speaking people assume there's always a deal to be had.

I do remember negotiating my first car with a nice Lebanese man in Ottawa, we agreed to a lower price, all cash under the table deal. Saved me $300.

Have you ever sold anything on eBay?
Their fee's are significant. eBay takes about 3% of your sale.
Then when you use PayPal to receive the funds they also take about 3-4% of your sale...

I get pissed off when I sell a $15 item an only get $12 of it..

Now imagine in a month a business makes $20,000 in revenue... and at least $750-1000 of that goes to CC and another $500-750 goes to debit fee's. And then processing fee's of another $200-500..

it adds up..

most of the small family owned ones, especially the further out you go where the population is more white than chinese

its more of a "omg we're so happy to see an asian, lets try and keep this customer by giving them a discount" i dont think its really a race issue

I was discussing this with my dad a few weeks ago, last year my dad paid visa an obscene amount of money in commission fees (high 5 digits), and had to spend a wad to get the equipment.

On low margin items it's just not worth accepting a credit card.

^ Yup, that's why a lot of places have a minimum purchase amount when using a cc or dc.

the businesses that are doing it aren't thinking about your convenience

i don't carry cash around but would go to an atm to go eat... if i don't get cash i limit myself to 10% of restaurants here only... because i work in richmond

Well, some businesses rank profits - every single dollar - higher than a customer's convenience.

It always bugs me when a place accepts cash only...

A small restaurant that has nothing over 10 bucks on the menu or a convenience store I can understand and overall that makes sense... BUT when it comes to places where there are bigger ticket items or people are going to spend more than say 50 bucks... the biggest one is NIGHTCLUBS not accepting credit cards...

Gossip and Fabric are two places that don't. Celebrities finally started taking American Express. I can't believe that Gossip is hosting mega events during the olympics and they are still cash only... I think that will have to change with the world showing up...

In my business the fee for accepting credit cards is part of doing business and is calculated into your operating costs and generally someone who can use a credit card will spend more (on the whole)...

IMO places (aside from those mentioned earlier) that don't accept cards are generally playing around with their books... I don't like paying taxes as much as the next guy... but I also don't like subsidizing those who feel the need to cheat the system... Its the same for those who claim EI while they are working... one day it will come back and bite you in the ass!

KARMA!

to have the processing machine available, businesses pay a % charge per transaction, a monthly fee to have the machine available. that % charge is anywhere up to 3%.

also, if u have a "charge back" registered via your company, thats a strike against u. the merchant can raise ur rate to keep using the machine. fraud happens so often now, that doing cash business is actually safer!
