buyer with counterfeit $100s on vancouver CL

heads up for sellers
young native looking kids just gave me fake $100s
hard to tell unless you compare it side by side with real bill
it has no grooves and i didn't bother to check as I was in a hurry

buyer will NOT try to low ball you and try to make a quick sale through emails
he will say he just sold his cell phone so he cannot call you or call him

lesson learned....

twitchyzero 03-06-2010 07:59 PM

sorry to hear
for 50's and 100's i try to make sure it's legal tender, but sometimes it's all wrinkled up or you're meeting up at night so it's hard to tell.

hope karma will get his ass.

Manic! 03-06-2010 08:02 PM

1. use your nails to check for ridges on the Prime Minister.
2. Look for a hologram on both sides.

Those are the 2 of the easiest ways to check.

Sorry for your loss.

ImportPsycho 03-06-2010 08:07 PM

i am carefull with 50's since fake 50s are dime a dozen but never imagined i would run into 100s...

azzurro32 03-06-2010 08:15 PM

Make a few more different ads for same item and hope he contacts you.

Take whatever contact information you have and hand it over to the police.

HonestTea 03-06-2010 08:23 PM

Casino? :)

invader 03-06-2010 09:54 PM

As a seller, request only $20 bills.

If they have fake 50 and 100 they probably have fake 20's
Just make sure to check your bills when selling stuff I always do

Those are good tips, here are some more:

3. You can also check for the water mark, hold up to a light/sun and see if you can see an image of the Prime Minister represented on the Bill

4. Clarity, if you CANT see the fine details, ie the circles in the pupil, then its fake.

5. Accidentally spill water on the bills, haha, legal bills are practically water resistant/proof, fake ones the ink will run

Sorry to hear, hope they get whats coming to em!!

Shun Izaki 03-06-2010 10:29 PM

the biggest thing with fake hundreds is the hologram isn't colorful, it's actually silver/chrome/black only.

But if you're in a hurry that's the best bet to check.

hotong 03-06-2010 10:31 PM

out of curiosity what did you sell him?

this

i always do this, even when it means i have to meet them at the bank and they have to get change
most people are cool with it, cause most buyers (especially on RS, CL, etc) are also sellers

if they don't agree, just take your sale someplace else
better to have to wait a few more weeks to sell something then to give it away for free

and like somebody said above, take whatever contact info you have and give it to the police
not too sure what good it'll do though, since the info they gave you was probably fake/friends phone or something, as i'm sure they didn't accidentally give you fakes

Harvey Specter 03-06-2010 11:13 PM

Damn, that sucks but I would contact the police if you haven't already and the water test is the best because the ink will run on every fake bill.

Farfetched 03-06-2010 11:14 PM

have you ever tried buying something for $2000 in 20s? it's a pain in the ass.

SumAznGuy 03-06-2010 11:24 PM

A black light will catch most of the fake bills too. It's very hard for criminals to get their hands on paper that doesn't shine under a black light.

This is why the kids usually spray that stuff with shoe guard shit from athlete's world, i saw a kid go into AW andbuy like 20 cans... i know that's not to protect his 50 pairs of nike shocks

InvisibleSoul 03-06-2010 11:34 PM

That sucks...

I've done dozens of sales on Craigslist in the past few months, but they've all been low value, so I've never had to be on alert for fake bills...

Certified cheque.

bcrdukes 03-07-2010 12:15 AM

My general rule of thumb to be safe from losers on Craigslist:

No phone number = No deal. This includes blocked numbers.

CP.AR 03-07-2010 01:08 AM

I've sold quite a few high value items on CL involving 100s and 50s, but I 've never run into this problem. Nevertheless, I check everytime before handing my stuff over (I tell buyer ahead of time over e-mail that I will be doing a quick check on the bills when I get them).

Here are some of the quick checks I go over:
- check for the raised studs on the corners
- check hologram and see if it matches the bill value (I remember on the news a while back that criminals were splicing 5 dollar holograms onto fake 50s)
- Run fingers through bill for texture
- hold random bills up to lit cellphone screen/flashlight for watermark

hope it helps! CL isn't as infested with retards anymore, so I'm surprised you caught the bad crop

MelonBoy 03-07-2010 01:08 AM

my rule of thumb is meet at the guys house.. anything goes down I know where he lives..

TOS'd 03-07-2010 01:31 AM

Does the whole rubbing bill on piece of paper, for the $50 dunno if it works on the $100, work? Like when you rub a $50, the red goes onto the paper. Or are fake ones able to do that.
