Basically, when companies leave China (and more and more will) they will go to India instead. Maybe it will cost more, but to many the added cost will be worth it.

It's happening a lot faster than one would anticipate:

So the people working in the factory will by the products they make. Seems like the money will be going around in a circle.

I wonder if these companies are replaceable. Like Google vs Baidu. Yes, Google leaves China, but that only opens up the market for Baidu to expand. After a while, it would have been as tho Google never existed. Same with GoDaddy and Dell. China can simply copy their business models and come up with GoMommy and Cell. In the end, the Chinese ppl will eventually buy thir homemade/copied brands. I don't see how these big Western corps can flip a bird at China

In China the GoDaddy knockoff commercials would have the cop pulling over a c-lai for changing lanes with no signal or shoulder check. It would end with the cop trying to arrest the driver for trying to bribe her. The commercial closes with the c-lai pointing at the color of her license plate and tearing up the ticket.

Ahh China

Ya but can the people afford the products they make?

Imagine owning a store and the only people buying are you and your workers. How would that work?

So I guess the sony LCD TV you own and your Iphone are both cheap shit?

You probably dont know, China only assembles these items, the components inside come from companies in the US, Japan and Taiwan. So buying a made in China pretty much is pretty much the same as buying in US or Taiwan or Japan, just that labour was done in China.

You think they aren't? All that electronic shit is just cheap disposable crap, intended to be replaced in no more than a couple years.

You just owned yourself with that argument

And nothing in an iphone comes from anywhere other than China. Probably same goes for most Sony TV's.

It would work the same way it does in any other country. It's not like Hillbilly Jim can afford the Cadillac being produced in his own country. I'm not going to go into great detail about the circular flow of income but money gets spread around. Many Americans want to bring manufacturing back to keep the money and jobs in America.

People talk about bringing manufacturing back to America but no one wants to pay 10g's for an American made TV and the average Chinese person can't afford a $1000 TV.

Costs don't stay the same. The more $10,000 TV's people buy, the less it'll cost to make and prices come down... and more people can afford them and prices come down even more, etc... Like I said, I didn't want to go into great detail about circular flow but money gets spread around. The auto industry is a good example of China's self sustainability. For the most part, they only sell their cars to themselves and the industry is thriving.

This seems to have gone off on a tangent so I'll get back to the original point I was trying to make. Walmart leaving China won't affect the country much at all but the world would be at a standstill if China shut it's doors to trade. They've amassed so much wealth and resources over the years that they can have their own self sustained economy, they don't need companies like Dell, Google or GoDaddy.

Oddly enough.. You and only couple more above are the only voice of reason in this thread.

And here's my sidenote ramble...
The only thing Dell accomplished was lower the cost of their business. Instead of China.. they are now bringing it India. Im fairly sure there was a bid process and India undercutted China. India can now enjoy Dell's sweatshop business.

Good on Google for stepping up against censorship. Although I find it hard to believe its only for that reason. There are many untold stories behind this fiasco. As well....financially.. a mistake. Whether they want to believe it or not. They will miss a big jump in revenue growth in the future. Again good on Google for using the censorship game. Somebody had to.

^good point. If Google & other companies have already decided to jump ship before this whole censorship fiasco, they might as well milk it for what it's worth and boost their image.

But the cost of wages don't come down. In America you still have to pay min wage and that's at least 10 x higher in the US than China.

Wages don't account for everything. Wages may not go down but other aspects of production costs do (buying more bulk materials, more efficient assembly lines, etc)... which makes things more affordable to more people. Things like cars used to be luxuries of the rich until Ford found a way to make it affordable to everyone.
