Official Tennis Thread

There were too many old tennis threads and I didn't want to bump them so I made a new one.

The weather has been pretty nice and I played for the first time in two years. It sure was fun getting back into it. I guess we could use this thread to arrange doubles or singles games for when we don't have friends around to play with. And it's a great way to meet some other members. And possibly tournaments/round robin games, if we have enough people.

So, who plays tennis either competitively or just for fun?

G 04-19-2010 07:47 AM

Used to play competitively for high school...But now I play leisurely during the summer.

hi-revs 04-19-2010 03:28 PM

i'd be up for some tennis!

RTS 04-19-2010 09:47 PM

3.5/4.0

im back in van and up for games.

InvisibleSoul 04-19-2010 11:10 PM

I started up for the year a couple weeks ago... was determined to once and for all work on my backhand so that it's a reliable shot.

One night, I went out and hit against the wall at night for a good hour until 8:45pm under a school floodlight... and it did absolute wonders... since then, I've played another 5-6 times already, and I have confidence in maintaining rallies with my single-handed backhand.

I'd say I'd be 3.5... 4.0 on a good day...

I usually play at Gladstone.

TOS'd 04-19-2010 11:30 PM

Cool, I guess most of us are around the same skill level at 3.5-4.0ish.

I usually play at Killarney, Joyce Station, or Bonsor.

Where's everyone else!

G 04-19-2010 11:51 PM

I don't get the 3.5 - 4.0 level, someone care to explain?

There you go. It helps when setting up games so you have a competitive partner.

RTS 04-20-2010 07:11 PM

Post your levels and lets get some games going yo.

G 04-20-2010 07:19 PM

im around 4.5-5.0 ... but I haven't played since last summer so I probably dropped down now! :p

Yea, set some games up! I need to get back into tennis!

TOS'd 04-22-2010 03:51 PM

TOS'd 04-23-2010 09:27 AM

im more a 4.0-4.5 player. but not able to serve:p

G 04-23-2010 08:08 PM

My serving sucks ass now... Last year, my friend taught me a serve called American Twist (?) it's the same serve that Roddick uses as his first serve... that TOTALLY fucked up my shoulder lol... So I have Kick serve and Spin serves only now :(

I say we play in May? More sun and probably hotter and better weather.

3.5-4.0 ish. I usually play at the Richmond Tennis Club but there are tonnes of public courts here. If you want to have a friendly hit or match give me a shout.

d1 05-03-2010 12:44 PM

Where do you guys get your rackets re-strung at? I don't want to get it done at sportchek.

G 05-03-2010 12:59 PM

^Tad's or Rackets and Runners (?)

InvisibleSoul 05-03-2010 02:12 PM

Yeah, probably the best two places to go... they know what they're doing there.

My OHBH feels so good now... :D I think that's pushed me up a half level to 4.0 now and 4.5 on a good day. LoL

Well, I'm old now... almost 30 already... been playing since grade 10 or so... but only about three years ago did I try to start developing my OHBH. I've always used OHBH, but it had always mainly been slice returns, so I had no attack from my BH wing at all. A few years back, I wanted to be more versatile, so I tried to learn to hit a proper driving OHBH with topspin, but had limited success because I didn't know what I was doing. It wasn't until this year when it finally clicked, after I dedicated myself to practicing it, and all it took was a few focused sessions against the wall. Obviously I'm no Federer, Gasquet, or Wawrinka, but it's getting better and better every session... can handle balls with decent pace, and even get high balls with decent consistency.

Probably my greatest asset is I employ a Michael Chang style of play, where I can cover a lot of court and have good anticipation of where shots are going. I force others to play an extra shot a lot of times.

G 05-04-2010 01:32 PM

^Not bad..ohbh is pretty hard to learn, takes a lot of time...I tried learning it and could only hit a limited amount back so I stuck with my two handed backhand since it generated more power and I could use it to get some winners down the line or cross court.

RS tennis meet?
