20 new conductor positions just came available
https://prod.fadvhms.com/cnr/jobboar...67F3B7FA4C01F5

On a side note: There seems to be alot of negative reviews about working for CN since the american's took over??!!! Alot of it has to do about backstabbing to get promoted, though I might strive in these circumstances!

I've yet to be yelled at by my employer. I've yet to be insulted, threatened, back stabbed, or other actions of the sort. I go to work and put in my 8 hours or so, and go home. Occasionally, I get a thank you, or good work. It's not a bad line of work. Where else can you make $30 an hour with just a high school education?

No doubt the pay is great, and all those reviews could be wrong about working for CN .... maybe the management team is better in vancouver vs our other canadian or american counterparts! you never know I guess.

GoneGuru 02-17-2011 03:34 PM

Is it really 30 an hour, or is it just averaged that way during the hours you shift, and the hours you sit on call?

catalin 02-20-2011 06:58 PM

Anyone know what an electrical apprentice for CN makes an hour??

catalin 02-20-2011 06:58 PM

How about a conductor?

When you work, it's minimum $30 an hour. More or less depending on differentials.

whats a typical day on the job as a conductor like?

I can only speak for yard work, not road.

Show up 10 minutes before shift, get safety gear on (hi viz vest, safety glasses, boots, etc). Get radio and switch lists (list showing cars in a track and where they are to be sorted in the yard). Determine how to switch them, job brief with crew, and then execute. Once finished, talk to yardmaster for more work.

Usually involves taking inbound traffic (trains that come into the yard) and breaking it apart as per the yardmaster. Also build trains to go outbound. I hope that sheds a bit of light on it. I'm trying to not use railway terms and it's difficult.
