When I worked at Chop
About 15kms 20-25 minutes depending on when I left and if I caught the morning traffic or not.

Now at school
About 5 kms. 5 Minutes driving, an extra 5 minutes looking for parking around Main/Terminal
Bus -> Skytrain about 20 minutes.

This is all One Way.

About 15-20 mins for me right now.. 5-10 minutes to the front of the complex where I work, and another 5-10 minutes drive and walk from there to my office. It's a huge place.

About 6 months ago before I came here, my drive was under 1km one way, it was amazing.

33 km each way. Fleetwood (Surrey) to Ironwood in Richmond. Usually takes about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic.

I hate it, but nothing I can do about it.

To work: 3 mins, maybe 2 mins if I drive faster and the lights are fine about 1-2km but this is really early in the morning

From work: 5 or so mins, depends on traffic and lights, + more congestion

If possible, those that have long-ass commutes should really try to find work closer to home. Even if that job pays a bit less, it could still be something that, overall, will put more money in your pocket. The time wasted in traffic, and waking up early, can be staggering, and you know the saying, "Time is Money!"

When I was commuting from Coquitlam to Richmond, it took me 1.5 hours roundtrip (minimum), and I did that for more than 5 years:

1.5 hours (at least)
5 days a week
48 weeks (due to vacations and stats)
---------
=at least 360 hours (15 days), spent in traffic.

That's already more than 1 bi-weekly pay-cheque, and fuel and car maintenance hasn't been factored in, yet. Add to that the fact you probably have to sleep early, and wake up early, so that's even more time wasted. You could save a lot of time and money by working close to home.

These days, I'm a 5 min drive between home and work. I have time to go home for lunch and chill with some crappy day-time TV. My salary is less than what it was when I was working in Richmond, but my net income has increased.

EDIT: Oh... and don't forget about health benefits in reducing/eliminating the stress that comes along with a long commute.

I lived in Richmond and went to school/work in Vancouver for a number of years. Having to cross a bridge twice every weekday meant that I spent quite a bit of time on the road (ok not as bad as others, but still).

When I got married in 2004, I moved out to Vancouver in the Marpole area. Sure, I could probably afford a bigger house in Richmond, but every time my coworker (who drives in from Richmond) complains about the traffic, I'm glad I didn't stay in Richmond.

When I was younger, I lived in Delta, and my dad worked downtown. It scares me to think of all that time he spent commuting.

14 km each way for me, Burnaby to Downtown. I don't know how you could get 30km each way... you must mean 30km to/from.
