6km round trip. In the summer I run, rollerblade and bike. In the winter, I drive.

Originally Posted by Gumby I lived in Richmond and went to school/work in Vancouver for a number of years. Having to cross a bridge twice every weekday meant that I spent quite a bit of time on the road (ok not as bad as others, but still).
When I got married in 2004, I moved out to Vancouver in the Marpole area. Sure, I could probably afford a bigger house in Richmond, but every time my coworker (who drives in from Richmond) complains about the traffic, I'm glad I didn't stay in Richmond.
When I was younger, I lived in Delta, and my dad worked downtown. It scares me to think of all that time he spent commuting. | This is pretty much the entire reason why my Parents, and many others choose to live in Vancouver. Vancouver is a central hub, so commuting to anywhere in the city, or even to Burnaby, Richmond, or even Surrey takes anywhere from 5-30 minutes. You can go from one end of Vancouver to the other end (say East to West Van / Marpole/Fraser to North Van) in about 15 minutes. I can get to Downtown in about 5-10 minutes from my house in East Van going REAL SLOW.
But it doesn't stop me from getting tempted to move out to Richmond or Burnaby. I'm jealous of my friend's house in Richmond around the Gilbert/Blundell area. His driveway is HUGE, and he has a 4 car garage. The driveway can fit about 6 cars not including the side street parking. Needless to say, as a car guy I'm extremely jealous when his family has 4 cars and there's only 3 of them, and they have space for more.

I have one to top all of you.
My friend used to work at the Kinko's on Hastings or Pender or Georgia in downtown (near pacific center). The manager lived in Merritt. He would wake up at some insane hour everyday, drive to Surrey King George, and Skytrain to work in Downtown. Dunno how long that took though.

Coquitlam to downtown. Anywhere from 25-50 minutes depending on the time of day and the amount of stupid drivers on the road that slow down the flow of traffic by doing stupid shit.

Is there any truth to driving short distances is extremely hard when it comes to wear and tear? I'm kind of surprised how many people here actually only drive their car for a couple minutes from home to work. That probably isn't good for the engine over the long term?
