The gym at school is nice., other than the lack of bench presses. It's also not that busy on weekend.

I feel that the quality of education and instruction at BCIT has taken a turn for the worst.

It is slowly becoming more of a university where they pile on a bunch of theory/lecture. Without the hands-on applied learning and application, there is no context into the classroom material. BCIT was well known for this, but I guess now that they are granting more and more university degrees, they've lost their way.

Perhaps I was lucky to have been in a program where one day in the week, it was lecture/theory, followed by a hands-on lab the next class to apply what we learned (or didn't learn.) I found this helpful because it showed very clearly who in the classroom did their readings and assignments and come lab day, you couldn't do the work, you would be called out and shamed to no avail because all you did was drag the rest of the class down. It's probably worse than an RS Beatdown.

In addition to bcr's topic, it almost feels like they're saying, here's the surface level shit that doesn't really have an application, now go out and be successful

I think it's only the business program that isn't that hands on or applicable.

^ Yea, pretty much all the trade stuff and very specific fields are hands on more engaging. If you're going to take a normal degree which can be done at any other college/uni then that stuff is moire theory/lecture based.

The Accounting degree had like a work-term that offered like 16 paid full-time co-ops last year. Apparently only 36ish ppl were in the program so over half of them got paid job for 4 - 8 months. Guess that's as hands on as one can get in a business program lol

I mean, I'm in a partly work term right now. Consulting for a tech firm in dt. But yeah, that's about all hands on it will get. I just don't think we learn what we pay for. They claim BCIT is trying to rebrand for an applied knowledge in all learning areas, but really, everything is just surface level - hard enough as it is.

Sometimes I feel like they give us a bunch of bs as a way of prepping us for the bs life is gonna throw at us. Or more specifically how to handle the workplace stress.

Tl;dr: I learn more life lessons from BCIT than education - quote on quote

Missed out. Will take advantage tomorrow. Can you also do it more than once if there's no line up.

There's like four s2ks on campus today.

I agree. Understanding how to deal with the workload was more useful than the actual education

two of the last 3 teachers/instructors i've had at BCIT are hardly what you would call a "teacher". Barely "professionals" in their fields handing out notes and lectures from a previous instructor.

I'd be down for a quick little meet up. Pretty much on campus everyday the last 2 weeks for finals.

Lol. You should see our Java teacher. Post youtube videos for us to watch, next day, quiz. After the quiz, activity/challenge to program something based on what he wants the program to do.

The least he could have done was some follow along programming. If an instructor is going to teach a course on coding/programming, follow along is best, because it's hands-on learning.

50% of students in both set failed the course. He then revised the requirement to pass. He probably woulda gotten in shit if he didn't revise because students would complain to the dean.
