Just got a quick question about Telus Vs SHaw.

I am looking to switch from SHAW to Telus. I currently have Basic cable, Fairchild and Talentvison and Extereme Intenet. The bill came out to about $110 each month.

Call Shaw to see if I can reduce my bill and they pretty much give me the take it or leave it attitude.

Anyways just wanted to know how's Telus service in terms of high speed? Looking to get a High speed Internet with them and pretty much what I have with SHAW before. The issue is I have about 6 computers on the network constantly and I do use PPS, BT, and Netflix pretty often so bandwidth and useage might be an issue. Also we have 3 TV right now so with Telus do I have to purchase a HD box for each TV?

If you're doing the TV + Internet combo and you're in Vancouver you'll most likely be on Optik. I'm getting Optik installed next week so I'll have a few speed test comparisons then.

I was just switched over to Optik several weeks ago as opposed to their traditional ADSL. So far, there seems are quite an improvement. I went from an average of 5Mb/s to about 10-12Mb/s (based off the Speedtest.net Burnaby server.) In terms of upload speeds, nothing to write home about. I should note that my tests were done over WiFi, not over cable.

Our household comprises of light surfing, e-mail, IM, YouTube and web radio streaming. This is more than enough for our needs so your mileage may vary. I can't say the same for Shaw simply because we haven't used their services in such a long time. I used to be a Telus employee so ADSL was 40% off and I decided to stay with them.

Telus, in the past, has been more lenient about their bandwidth caps than Shaw. That was a few years ago, when I was more up to date with ISPs in the GVRD.

I would not sign any contract. Where are you located? What are you looking to spend for internet access?
This is because if you're on Telus high speed (the 6Mbps or higher), it uses the same lines as their TV service and they can't distinguish between the internet traffic and the TV traffic. In effect, you have unlimited cap space since they can't enforce it.

No, you don't need to actually use their TV service. It doesn't matter.

Note how I said "a few years ago". As in, 5+ years ago, when Optik didn't exist, and Telus didn't offer TV service.

Also, I find it hard to believe that a giant telecom company like Telus can't distinguish between voice/video and data traffic on their network. That would be like saying Telus doesn't employ any sort of QoS technology, which doesn't sound likely at all.

If I was moving into a building that had CAT5 pre-wired (which is quite common), I would look into getting Novus internet over Telus, no question about it.

I would go telus, but i dont want a contract, nor have I ever had a good experience with them in the 4 different times i have went back to them(due to them being the only provider in the area).

Shaw has won me thru and thru....never have had a bad experience with them

I believe if your neighbors show majority interest in Novus, they can approach them and ask if Novus can introduce services to the building.

Novus would then have to throw in some hardware into your building.

Sigh call telus last night and the qouted me around 70 dollars for Optik Internet, Basic cable, fairchild/talentvision,1 HD DCT and 1 free XOBOX 360 if I sign a 3year contract. Or if not contract it will be $110.

So I told them with SHAW that's how much I am paying so why should I switch and she just pretty much said take it or leave it. Not to mention the tone of her voice sounded she doesn't want my service.

Not really sure what to do now since SHAW and TELUS is out there to rip us off.

does the $70/month include a phone line? also note that Optik TV service includes a basic HD package as well. you'll get local stations and major networks in HD as part of your basic package!

no phone. Our phone line is pretty cheap (Italk BB my parents switch it without letting me know first...).

Quality isn't that bad we just plug their ATA into the router and it seems fine. Quality isn't as good as telus but for 6.99 a month we get unlimited North american calling and I think 200Mins to HK/CHina with voice mail, call forwarding.... is not a bad deal at all. The only thing though is that since we didn't wire it with the phone jacks so we have to plug the cordless phone into the ATA. Is fine overall since our cordless phone have 3 different phones.

If the ATA has an extra phone jack, plug a phone line from that into an empty phone jack in the wall. If all the phone lines are wired together in your house, the ATA will feed every phone jack.
