Telus Optik High Speed vs. Shaw High Speed Extreme

Any significant differences between the two?

I have been using Shaw for the past many years that I can remember

I never liked ADSL , but since I'm getting a deal from Telus. I thought I might try it.

I do download a lot a month, so will Telus be really 'anal' about bandwidth

your inputs would be great

What do you consider "a lot"? 100 GB?

Telus, in the past, has been more lenient about their bandwidth caps than Shaw. That was a few years ago, when I was more up to date with ISPs in the GVRD.

I would not sign any contract. Where are you located? What are you looking to spend for internet access?

If you're in an apartment try to get Novus - 20 down and 10 up, plus HDTV for $25 a month. I had to call in to have them match Telus' offer but they did it without flinching.

is that just the free hd channels you get for having a hd pvr box, or did novus give you additional hd? and did they rent u the hdpvr?

I'm getting net 20, basic channels and free sd receiver for 21 month

Telus sucks crap. I was getting Mbps.

They told me Optik was faster, so I switched. I got 12Mbps 2x since I had this thing installed 2 months ago, and the rest of the time it's been about 2Mbps. Yes, performance actually went DOWN after the upgrade.

I signed 3 years with Telus to give them a shot. Unless I see some major improvements in the next year, it's back to Shaw for me.

The good news I guess is you get a free Xbox 360 out of the deal if you sign 2 years.

Got upgraded to Optik, last week. I'm near the switch, and I get 1.6MB/s (megabytes!) download, consistently. My parents are on the edge of the service area, and the most they manage is 1.0MB/s.

I have TelusTV, but I am going to cancel it. With such crazy bandwidth, I'll just download what I want to watch, and it will only take a few minutes.

My telus highspeed is advertised as 6Mbps, I have never registered over 1.25Mbps and I've rarely downloaded faster than 120 kb/s

Well if you are getting that from downloads then I suspect you read the units incorrectly.

1.6 - 2.0 Mbps is roughly around 0.2 - 0.25 MBps. Which is slow.
1.6 - 2.0 MBps is roughly around 12.8 - 16 Mbps. Which is around what you should be getting.

Shaw high speed extreme is rated at 15 Mbps, around 1.875 MBps.

Does the speed seem fast to you?

People here are talking about their overall speeds. Which you can find out on speedtest.shaw.ca if you want to know your actual speed. I'm assuming you're saying you get 1.6-2.0 mbp/s downloading on websites but you have to keep in mind it also depends on the website's server connection what speed you get.

My condo is wired up for Telus and I have seen speeds of 2.5 megabytes per sec with basic internet and tv package - no xtreme speeds upgrade (or whatever they call it). I've never had better download speeds than this. From my personal experience, I've had a ton of problems with Shaw in the past.

Telus tech support, in my experience, is not as good as Shaw tech support.

How much do you pay for Telus, and which area are you in?

Geographically, although they may be closer, the route your packets take may span more hops (servers).

edit: Novus has a speedtest: http://speedtest.novuscom.net/

Just queue up a couple torrents and set you upload/download bandwidth to unlimited. Mine seems to peak at 1.7MB/s (megabyte) down and 110KB/s (kilobyte) up.

A little for you to think about..

Keep in mind that if you are using Telus Optik High Speed, and your other TVs are on in the household, your bandwidth can dive significantly depending on if it's a SD or HD broadcast.

HD broadcast = -5Mb/s loss per TV
SD broadcast = -3Mb/s loss per TV

Example: if you are on a 15Mbps Highspeed bundle, and you are downloading a file, with 2 HDTV's on, your download speed may drop to 5Mb/s (assuming that you are maxing out on your connection).

This is NEVER the case with Shaw Highspeed.

thats cause shaw is better and the connections are seperate

shaw also has free service calls if something goes wrong, others might charge you quite a bit. telus has crappy customer service as well but be prepared to wait to wait on hold for shaw
