Have any of you driven that highway?
It's a wide open, smooth, 4 lane highway with big shoulders on both sides, and hardly any traffic on it.The posted limits would be more appropriate at 140-150 than 110.
If there was any highway to do this speed, this would be one of best.
The driver is from Campbell River and is heading south ( away from CR) towards Courtenay (where they have more snow) to "escape a snowstorm"? Driving that Hwy at 200k plus in summer with no traffic and dry pavement is not safe...now add snow & ice on the hwy and you have a fatal looking for a place to happen. Happy to hear that they got him safely stopped and his notice of driving prohibition served ( he must have been ducking service) before he killed someone. Had 2 people already killed due to overdriving road conditions at speeds way less than 200kmh.

As someone who worked that area, has driven it at high speed in response to emergencies, and went to the crashes there for years, I would disagree. Most of the crashes involved drivers who thought exactly like you do. Sorry but I disagree. Even taking away the speed related crashes, there are a large number of car vs deer/elk crashes there as well. At 200 k by the time you see one, you are dead.

I'm not trying to say what the driver did wasn't wrong.
Not counting road conditions, my point was that if this driver choose to do this where no other cars were around it would be relatively safer than doing the same on other highways (Malahat, Hwy 1 etc), or even safer than doing 110km/h in the city (Yes I consider The Ferrari/BMW Seymour Mountain incident much more dangerous) Taking that into account, I don't feel the same instantaneous outrage as others here simply hearing the "200km/h" number.
If this guy was doing this around other traffic, or swerving in and out of traffic, then fuck him I'm glad he was caught and punished accordingly.
If this guy were to go out of control and careen off the road or hit a deer/elk and die it would be no one's fault but his own, he took his life into his own hands and I wouldn't give any sympathy to him either.

So if I were to speed at 160 at Highway 1 within the lower mainland at 3am, it shouldn't be that bad of an offense because it's "relatively safer" at those times due to lack of automobile volume?

There's not one straight on hwy 1 between Vancouver and chilliwack that is as flat or straight as the island hwy Posted via RS Mobile
150+ on Highway within the lower mainland is doable. It can handle it. The point is, is it safe or not.
200 on flat stetch like you and Great68 mentioned is doable, but not safe. Like Zulutango mentioned, at those speeds, and slight disturbance is magnified greatly. Whether that disturbance is inert or external (ie. dodging wildlife)
Way to miss the point idiot. And despite your point, I always see motorists every now and then do those speeds well after midnight; despite the construction
So what do you say about that? Are they justified. Does lack of auto volume + space = free reign on the highways?

Uh yeah, Your risk to other motorists on the highway is definately lower when there are no other motorists on the highway. While it may not be safer to YOU, it's relatively safer to others, therefore safer overall. I don't get what's not understood about that.
That fact that its a Civic makes this even worse, it can barely stay on the road going 200km an hour in the best conditions, going in a straight line, driven by an experienced driver. The kid should see jail time.
hes 20, live and learn . Speeding and u get put in jail ? rly... u that hardcore eh

Your ignoring the other circumstances. He's a driver under probation, so clearly he hasn't learned from lesser penalties. Its time to step it up before he kills someone else.
Some stretches of highway 1 can handle 160km/p, the island highway definitely can, but the cars can't. The average driver is on tires with a P or Q rating at best, not ZR tires built to handle autobahn level speeds.
Having lived in Courtenay I can definitely attest to how wide open, straight and smooth the island highway is in that region. I have to agree that the speed limit could easily be raised from 110. Perhaps we should have two limits like in Europe for good and poor weather conditions.
An inexperienced driver doing 200k on a snow covered road is nuts
oh hell, look at Kinght street bridge all the way to the end at westminster.
all those deaths over the years, with people doing in excess of 200km/h+ easily. any car could do it. its more than enough room. just a matter of guts and if you're insane/ inconsiderate enough to do it.

That's a good suggestion. Dual limits is a great idea.
Actually a friend of one of my uncles is a Highway designer in France.
One of his comments was that stretch of highway would easily be 140 in Europe.
