might be a bit out of OP's price range for a tercel but it's got a lot of "potential" and feels like its faster than any other tercel out there!

i have a 91 jeep cherokee that i'm trying to sell at the moment.

cosmetically it doesn't look great, but it runs great!

its a cheap car, a 4x4, and im asking $1500.

Its a 2dr cherokee sport, with the reliable and powerful 4.0L i6, 4x4, and a 5spd manual gear box.

The car is no where near perfect/show car. Its basically a beater/winter beater, but it drives great. its reliable, and its cheap to fix.

If you have any interest, feel free to PM me.

Good Luck with your search. $3000 can buy you a whole lot of car.

I just bought a 1997 turbo diesel jetta a few weeks ago. They are known for easily getting to 500,xxx km with little or no engine work partly due to having metal head gaskets stock. Toss and intake on it to hear the turbo spool and it is a totally bearable daily driver. I think I get about 40 mpg. It had 243,xxx km when I picked it up for $3300. Theres one in maple ridge for $3000 right now with 300,xxx km but you could probably get him down to $2500 because thats what it is worth and he hasn't sold it.

I don't know this guy at all but that is a super solid jeep, and by 2010 a 91 jeep seldom is still cosmeticly good. +++ no timing belt and 5 spd, thats a solid buy!

If I was getting a car around $3000, I'd strongly consider this:
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/bn...094324313.html

2002 with an engine with low kms, sunroof, manual tranny, storage space, fun to drive, good on gas.

Funny how a thread starts as "is 3g's a good budget for a beater" to "hey have I got a deal for you".
Yes 3g's is gonna get you a car with lots of life. I'd recommend something with standard as few auto's make it past 200000km's without a major service that is far more expensive then a clutch job. If you plan on keeping this beater for more then two years stay away from anything with rust especially Japanese imports once they start to rust of you don't address it right away they will look real beaterish in no time.
Honda's, Nissans, Toyota all make great beaters Jeeps are great beaters but stay away from 80's jeeps bad bad bad, VW's are good too if you like to tinker and a VW is as far euro as I'd recommend going in the beater market.
Now keep in mind there is lots of people out there that will take a $1000 beater apply some spit, polish and a sugar coating attempting to sucker someone into paying much more for it so have it checked out or your $3000 beater may become a money pit. I have seen this happen countless times.

^ this

i loved my s14 240sx. ka24de is solid as hell (thank you timing chain) and it was pretty reliable.

BUT, s13's will give you problems here and there. nothing too major but still a pain in the ass.

as for comfort and DD, civic is probably a better choice (which the OP has gone for?)

you can't go wrong with a mid 90's japanese import.

and good luck with your future endeavors OP! never too late to go back to school!

EG/EK civic

my EG had 280,000km's on the odometer and it stopped working 1.5-2 years before i got rid of the car, so that was probably another 65-80,000km's

the only thing that ever want bad with the car was my alternator went, under $600 maintenance total including oil changes over 5 years of ownership, pretty good i'd say lol

thanks for your input.

They are solid! 91 was the first year of the high output engine (190hp, 240tq). They engine block and head are iron. As you mentioned its run by a timing chain, and its an old school OHV pushrod engine. I was amazed that out of my 3 cars, it was also getting the best gas mileage (pretty good for a 4.0L). I actually just sold mine right now $1400. These jeep xj's are great cars, and even great beaters!

i guess my only suggestion was an suv but honestly compared to my volvo and bmw, it was the best on gas. I would put about half a tanks worth of gas (30-35$) and it would last me a 300km if i was easy on it. I went to seatttle with it and it only used a quater of a tank. I was really surprised with its fuel economy.

Being a Honda fanboi, of course I'd recommend a Civic... but he makes a good point. Thieves love Civics. Alarm or no alarm, you still pay more insurance for them.

I would say look for a Tercel, late 90's model. My g/f had a 97 Tercel, and she beat on that thing like no other. She had ZERO issues the 6-7 years she owned it, it got incredible gas mileage, insurance was stupidly cheap, and nobody fucks with them. Because seriously, it's a Tercel... even thieves know they aren't worth stealing/breaking into!

If I were to get a beater, this car would be at the top of my list. Plus, Toyota made this body style of Tercel in lots of disgusting colours! Which if you don't care about colour, may help you score an even better deal!

There must be some reason thieves don't want corolla's.
