need a new cheap dim sum place

sadly the roc on kingsway and clark is closing this week so we need to find a new cheap dim sum place (for the first time in 3-4 years) for saturdays with family

what's your cheap dim sum joint?

Nvasion 01-09-2011 10:45 AM

dai tung?
i like that place also on broadway/nanaimo..(greeen sign place)

pastarocket 01-09-2011 03:57 PM

Dai Tung gets my vote too. For about thirty dollars, my buddy and I had a big dim sum lunch. The shrimp dumplings taste good.

I also agree that Dai Tung is a good place to go for cheap dim sum. I go there regularly....

$2 a dim sum on weekdays & $2.50 weekends (i think)

good thing about them is they push a cart & u order from the cart so u don't need a menu if u can't read chinese (like me) & they have pretty decent food with lots of variety cuz theres not a lot of places that can make or product the food they can

i wrote that in another thread awhile ago last year, few guys on had good reviews as well & my family loves it there

Wow, didn't know they were closing. Used to get take-out dim sum from there once in awhile since I live half a block away... usually a couple bowls of congee... but since HST came in, the size of the congee bowl got cut in half, so it totally wasn't worth it anymore... so we stopped doing take-out after that.

There's another dim sum place literally right across the street... haven't been there in awhile though, but last I remember, they were cheap as well.

dai tung is crazy busy by 12 though right? not sure how willing to wait my family are though, which the biggest reason we would always go to the roc

wuuhoo 01-10-2011 12:26 AM

^ real small though. Your so cramped up in your table.

Or tahts how it was when I went last

Fafine 01-10-2011 01:08 AM

although dai tung is cheap its packed as hell.

there's a dim sum restaurant at lansdowne and its 30% off if you pay before 11am. other places only 10-20% off before 11am.

LiquidTurbo 01-10-2011 01:26 AM

Cheap Price
Clean Restaurant
Good Food

Pick 2.

My pick is HKYK. Pretty reasonable prices. Or the place right beside Yaohan.

Anakin 01-10-2011 11:19 AM

anything else in east van? driving to richmond is bad enough, then having to line up is too much to deal with on a hangover saturday

Haha my family used to go to this place all the time when I was a kid. :D

The prices are cheap but the dim sum is very mediocre as well. Prince (on 12th and Renfrew) and Happy Valley (Broadway and Rupert) are much much better (and only a tad more expensive).

InvisibleSoul 01-11-2011 09:55 AM

Do you know why they're closing?

Ikkaku 01-11-2011 10:04 AM

line ups are pretty bad at no.1 lol we used to frequent that place

most places on weekends you will have to line up for

oh and Rainflower or whatever, the place beside Yaohan, is not all that cheap.

no evening patrons, too much competition for dinner crowd and no one would come if they bumped up their dim sum prices

it's apparently turning into a vegetarian restaurant, what a waste
