Most likely... Time machine by default will backup everything. Carbon copy cloner by default will clone the entire drive. What do you use for backups?

Odd. I've been through 6 different SSD's and not 1 has ever had problems or failed. Out of those 6 I've had a few that I've used for more than a year without issue. Manufacturers would be screwed if the drives died 1 year out of their 2/3 year warranty.

The only thing I can think of is the Sandforce firmware defect which was resolved recently. But that was to a specific chipset and it wasn't actually failing.

anyone care to elaborate on VMware? Do I need a windows server or something in order to run virtual windows on a mac?

If you wanna run windows on your mac i have 3 recommendations:

vmware fusion + pretty much any version of windows
virtualbox + pretty much any version of windows
bootcamp + windows xp sp3 and up

bootcamp requires you to reboot your computer to go into windows. only use this if you're a power user (ex: play games, use cpu intensive apps). bootcamp is built into osx.

virtualbox and vmware are fairly similar. virtualbox is free and vmware cost money. vmware is more user friendly and has a few more options. this works like a window inside osx so you don't have to reboot.

The problem with uTorrent is that the Windows version and Mac version are not the same.

I use utorrent on Windows, but Transmission is probably a better option for Mac OS.

Sold my 17" MBP to go for a Mac Mini server+Thunderbolt Display combo. The display is here... waiting patiently for the Mini.

Anyone here has exp. with Mac OS X Server?

I am reading online and basically it integrates the server components of regular apps? Like calendar, mail... etc. What else is useful for an end-user rather than server-oriented?

Lion Server is basically Lion client with LDAP, VPN, file sharing, webdav, wiki, web, caldav, mail, ichat, podcast and XSAN services installed and activated. Some of these services may be useful is you wish to run your own email/calendar/file/vpn server for you home or small business. If its just you then the whole server part of Lion Server will be useless to you.

If you really don't NEED a server then I recommend exchanging your mac mini server for the entry level model and save $400. Then take $30 and buy lion server (if you want to try it out), take $50 and buy 8GB of RAM, and then take $120 and buy a 3TB external hard drive (from Costco bellingham) for data storage.

How about as a future home server? The plan is to get the mini now, then I'm getting an Ivy Bridge based MBP next year. The Mini will then stay as a media/file/HTPC with a Promise Pegasus R6.

I picked up the lowest model Mini. Bought some extra ram and the 2nd Sata cable to run two internal drives, so now it has an SSD for the system and the stock HDD for storage. Way cheaper than getting the Server version. http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/Ma...-Kit/IF171-005

I'm very happy with the little i5, unless you have a ton of users accessing the server you won't need the i7.


This is my home server for:
1. User directory server
2. Time Machine backups
3. Media Storage


A quick note on the Lion Server app. You will need to register an SSL certificate if you want everything to run smoothly. Self signed certs are a real pain in the ass, especially if you want to use any services outside of your home network.

I cant help but notice the numerous listings of brand new and sealed macbooks with applecare for under the MSRP on craigslist.

I mean, if you claim it was an unwanted gift then why not return it to Apple for a full refund? Its too good to be true, imo.

You could always verify that the serial# is valid by checking online and if they have a receipt.

That's one possible way to check, but it's not always a solid verification.
Especially when it was purchased with a fraudulent credit card.

The Apple database isn't updated as quickly about a stolen or for credit card fraud Mac's.

My friend works for an Apple store and a customer unknowingly purchased a computer on eBay which was stolen. At the time of purchase it was listed as a safe machine, valid warranty. The customer brought it in for warranty a few months later and it was flagged. Apple HQ contacted the RCMP directly and they took the computer. Customer was the victim, no replacement and no compensation.

If the price is too good for a new Mac, caveat emptor.

Best Buy Kelowna is selling the older early 2011 MBP as a door crasher for only $599. I recently just bought the same model, refurbished for $979. This is not a regular sale, its a door crasher price on a clearance model for the grand opening location only.

Apple fixes prices on their products, you won't find more than $50-100 off anywhere. This Friday Apple is doing their regular Black Friday sale, expect as little as $5 off on some items and $100 on others.
