Mexico demands apology from BBC (because of Top Gear)

Quote:
Mexico's ambassador in London has written a furious letter to BBC bosses to complain about "offensive and xenophobic" comments made by presenters of the popular TV motoring show Top Gear.

...

Why would you want a Mexican car? Because cars reflect national characteristics don't they?," said (Richard) Hammond as they discussed the Mexican sports car, the Mastretta.

"Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat."

...

"That's why we won't get any complaints about this because at the Mexican embassy the ambassador's going to be sitting there with a remote control like this," said Clarkson, pretending to slump in a chair, snoring.

However, the ambassador did complain, demanding the BBC order the presenters to make a public apology.

"The presenters of the programme resorted to outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable insults to stir bigoted feelings against the Mexican people, their culture as well as their official representative in the united Kingdom," he wrote.

"These offensive, xenophobic and humiliating remarks serve only to reinforce negative stereotypes and perpetuate prejudice against Mexico and its people."

For all the jokes they make about the Germans being Nazis its surprising that they haven't complained. I've seen every ep of Top Gear and this is the only time I remember them even talking about Mexico.

Sounds like they're cranky. Maybe they should take a nap against a nice comfortable fence looking at a cactus.

Hate to say it but the Mexican Ambassador is just going to look like a poor sport for this. The show makes fun of every country so I don't see why Mexico is any different.

They did, kind of. They mentioned a heavily armoured vehicle that was made by a Canadian company and said "What happens in Canada that makes you need something like this?"

A poke at our boring and bland image, but you don't see anyone dropping their beers, picking up their hockey sticks, and demanding blood to flow like maple syrup over it

I would think the dog eating references and all the likeness to German cars = Hitler would be more inflammatory. Lol. I pretty sure the BBC has somewhere in the credits " the opinion of those on this show do not reflect the views of the BBC" and then this Mexican dude will look like a moron.

Mexico should build cars with compartments to hide cocaine.

That should get them some bonus marks.

Mexico might as well demand their own people to not be drug dealers.

Haha I forgot about that.

Everyone pokes fun at Canada because they know we can take jokes and laugh with them. Remember the olympics? yeah we make fun of ourselves too.

well to be fair the language in this instance is rather harsh compared to the jokes they've done to others

to be honest i was expecting jokes about drug mules / border jumpers etc

^ i agree

Although maybe a line would've been okay, hammond went on for a good 30 seconds about mexicans.

it's not even about "political correctness" here, his remarks were blatantly racist.
