i think ive been in quakes that were 3-5 richter before but they usually lasts less than 15 seconds..pretty common in some areas of SE Asia.

You know this got me thinking... (i didnt feel this one or know about it till this thread)
The last time we had that larger earthquake... several years ago now i think...
me and my family didn't do anything we just sat there looking around wondering how bad it would get instead of reacting
-_-
should probably change that.... in case the next time the house just falls on us while we're observing
1st thing id grab is my wallet (where my phone and keys sit atop of so those too) then try and get out of the country/province until things get back to normal

| I still remember the last 'major' quake we had, I was in drafting class back in highschool, the ceiling lights were swaying and people were like OH SHIT. Mind you, this was in Richmond, and the drafting room pretty much had concrete walls. Anyways, people were pointing out to good ol' Mr. Erickson that there is an earthquake, and he's all like 'that's absurd! the odds of that happen is incredibly slim!' He goes out to the office to see what's up and comes back in with a :S face and was like 'okay, you're right, there was an earthquake'

We all need to be prepared though, and just because it hasn't come doesnt mean it wont come. Water, food, meeting places, emergency contacts = all need to be discussed with loved ones. And the phone lines will be jammed if an earthquake does happen, so relying on telecommunications won't be of help.

We got so many trains going by here... a heavy freight ripping through at full speed gets the house shaking pretty good. Big One will hit and I won't even know the difference.

and how exactly would you leave the country?
airports would be closed, roads would be fucked = you would be stuck here.
+ if there was a big earthquake, it might not even hit BC, might be closer to Seattle you never know.....

I just had a thought that if we have a bunch of small earthquakes, wouldn't that depressurize the plates enough and reduce the chance of "the big one". =S

Keep in mind that the actual subduction zone, and the expected epicenter, for the "Big One", is a good 20-30km off the west coast of Vancouver Island. That means Vancouver is more than 100km from it... and they still expect huge damage.

And heading south wouldn't make much difference if an earthquake was bad enough to make you want to leave. As for the airport, it's technically part of Richmond, and we all know what some predict would happen to Richmond during the Big One |

Doesn't that make the island alot more vulnerable than say richmond? Being underwater is one thing but the force of the impact... Quote:

The only thing the island is good for in "the big one" is saving us all from a tsunami. The island and the mainland are on the same plate and will therefore "shake" relatively the same amount. Richmond's gonna sink no matter what in an earth quake. Unless for some fucked up reason it rises during the process...
