Vancouver woman racks up $37K on monthly iPhone bill

Quote:

A Vancouver woman is speaking out against Telus after she racked up almost $37,000 on her monthly cell-phone bill during a trip to Egypt.

Alanna Fero visited North Africa for a couple of weeks and took her brand-new iPhone with her. She says that before she left, she talked to Telus several times about what sort of voice and data plan would be appropriate to avoid a huge bill.

When she learned about the total on her bill, Fero said, "I burst out laughing .... Somebody had to have hacked into it or something; there's no possible way that I, in two-and-a-half weeks, ran up a $37,000 bill."

She says she asked a Telus staff member to investigate what happened.

"They just put someone else on the phone who said, ‘No ma'am, this is your bill and Africa is expensive.'"

But Telus spokesman Shawn Hall says that the phone company noticed a spike in Fero's data use almost immediately after she left Canada. The company cut off her service, and representatives spoke to her over the phone.

"She asked us to turn the data back on," he said.

Hall says Fero used about 1,600 megabytes of service during her trip.

"That's a lot -- an average song is about four megabytes," he said.

"You can't go overseas and expect that the data plans and the wireless rates that you're going to get are going to be the same here. You travel to North Africa and the rates are going to be a lot higher."

But Hall says that Telus wants to work with Fero to reduce her bill.

"Bottom line, we want to talk to this customer and sort it out. We know it's a huge bill; we want to talk to her and figure it out," he said.

this made me laugh. what a stupid woman, does she not have common sense? even using your phone in the US is pretty expensive so why would using it in Egypt be any different

drunkrussian 03-03-2011 08:08 PM

lol even if they reduce it by 50% itll be over fifteen grand.

Let me get this right.... they cut off her data.... talk to her about it on the phone... and she STILL racks up $37k??? This has gotta be on the customer.

SpuGen 03-03-2011 08:15 PM

She's gonna get fucked if she even tries to sue. Telus/rogers/bell/fido etc. Record thier calls for this very reason.

If it was recorded that she told them to turn it back on, and a disclaimer was given, she's fucked.

Lawl, what an idiot...
Probably uploading egypt video onto youtube for her 3 mins fame

is there any way that providing this woman with the service actually cost telus anywhere near 37k?? Im actually a little afraid to ask what their profit margin is on a bill like this, let alone all the other $100 a month bills out there

CharlieH 03-03-2011 08:32 PM

shes a fucking idiot. roaming overseas is generally $25/mb.

1600 x 25 = GFG

Hondaracer 03-03-2011 08:34 PM

well i'm sure Roaming in egypt is not cheap.. and you are not using Telus's lines, you are using the local service providers

when i was in Arizona i used my iphone for GPS and a few "around me" app times

i probably used data for a total of 30 minutes, and nothing extremely data intensive, and i managed $120 in charges

MG1 03-03-2011 08:35 PM

Olsen Not On Your Side, in this case.

This woman, Alanna Fero, is retarded.

+1, the total cost to them was probably a fraction of the total bill.

So if i go to a casino and lose 10 grand, since they make so much profit off other people while i'm not there, they should give some of my money back?

Vansterdam 03-03-2011 08:47 PM

LOL idiot

MG1 03-03-2011 08:48 PM

OMG, just googled her thinking she could be a hot looking air head.

BrRsn 03-03-2011 08:49 PM

Oh fuck her. I love how people can weasel their way out of everything. No wonder the amount of giant vaginas in modern society is increasing exponentially. I hope telus sticks it to her, dumb bitch.

Just pisses me off when people use their stupidity/ignorance to get out of anything/everything. Whatever happened to owning up to what you did?

If she gets any amount credited for this, I should get my overages credited too because "I didn't know it was going to cost so much". It's like we're rewarding stupidity and the lack of awareness.

She probably tethered her iphone to her macbook to upload pics of herself to her facebook so all her gay little blond haired $8 starbucks coffee holding fake tit having, dog in chanel bag carrying poseur friends could comment and say "OMGGG UR IN EGYPT!! YOU SEXCI BITCH LOLOLOLOL". Too bad she didn't get killed in the riots, that'd be a sweet facebook status "LOL HELP IM BEING ATTACKED!!!!!!!!"

Preemo 03-03-2011 08:52 PM

This I have no remorse for.

Anyone who has ever worked retail will have at some point have dealt with a customer such as this. Thinking they know everything there is to know when in reality they don't know shit and then blaming the problem on something so generic.

Hell, even after ignoring the warning from Telus? This one is definitely on the moron.

Manic! 03-03-2011 08:55 PM

Why can't Telus make a real time bill app.

Gh0stRider 03-03-2011 08:57 PM

LOL @ Alanna Fero

They're bonuses come from people going over their minutes/data/texts

good example of corporate social responsibility but also a good way to reduce revenues

however, with Bell I'm actually able to log onto their customer service website and monitor how much i've used up and actually did when I had an error on my phone about data usage. Not to mention you CAN track your info on your iphone if you just check usage in the settings section. Not sure about other smart phones.

this isnt what Im trying to get at. That is stupid. What Im wondering is, if providing her this service cost telus say $1000 out of their pocket, does making $36,000 profit really seem reasonable. I have no doubt that this bitch is completly retarded and she has done this to herself. BUT, Telus is also the biggest bunch of cock suckers I have dealt with in my life. Ok maybe they are second to ICBC

Jegz 03-03-2011 09:08 PM

Name sounds like a chocolate

When I went to California last summer, I switched my 500mb data from Canada data to Canada + US Data. Cost me $10 more/month. Rogers had this option in the past, not sure if they still do... but anyways, gave me access to all 500mb of my data, and only cost $10 more to do it. Not a bad idea if you know you'll be there for 2-3 weeks, anyway.

This lady was just plain STOOOOOOOpid. How can you not know you're going to be paying through the ass and back, ass to mouth style, when you're roaming, with data and voice. They even have travel packages/setups where you pay an up-front fee and you get a reduced rate charge. The fact that she didn't do this, and even told them to turn her services back on... Ridonculous.

That's not fair. I don't care how big the corporation is, rules are rules.

You go out to dinner and say your bill comes to $150. The restaurant's costs are only $100. Is it right to bitch and complain and get out of paying for those $50? It doesn't matter whether it's $50 or $36,000, you know what the items on the menu cost, the server even cut you off half way through, but you demanded more food, then fucking pay it!

If she had HALF a brain, she'd buy a simcard in egypt and just stick it in her phone, like any NORMAL person does when they visit anywhere.

At my job, I used to make $9/hour. One month my bill came to $600. My dad usually pays my phone bill because i rarely work, but I thought this amount was way too high to ask for my dad to pay. I could've easily gotten my dad to pay it and he wouldn't have said anything more than "you're an idiot" and paid it, but I didn't because I know it's my fault.

Promoting the easy way out is in no way a good way to improve anything.
