Think it's because if you don't enter tuition info the program won't know that you're a student and hence give you the WITB. Was so sad to realize students are eligible to receive the WITB.

Quote from CRA:

"You are not eligible for the WITB in 2010 if:

You do not have an eligible dependant and are enrolled as a full-time student at a designated educational institution for more than 13 weeks in 2010;
You are confined to a prison or similar institution for a period of 90 days or more in 2010; or
You do not have to pay tax in Canada because you are an officer or servant of another country, such as a diplomat, or a family member or employee of such person."

- So students with 13 or less weeks of school, and have a dependent are eligible for the WITB.

Regarding tuition fees, from the CRA site, "Students must claim their tuition, education, and textbook amounts on their return and apply the amount that is required to reduce their own federal tax payable to zero, before they can calculate and transfer an unused amount to an eligible individual, even if someone else paid their fees."

I don't why everyone is like about tax returns.. it's money that you earned ALREADY.

It's like giving $100 away to someone, having them hold it for a year, and then going when they give it back.

If anything, it should be because that is money that could have been in your bank account doing something else instead of giving a government a tax free loan!

^to me it's more like that feeling when you find a $20 bill in your jeans you haven't worn in a while. you got along your days just fine without it, but now that you found the money it's a bonus!

just did mine earlier this week, hopefully that money comes quick. i used turbotax (standard) online and it was only $17 - recommended if you want to make filing totally brainless.

Thinking of doing my taxes myself this year. Usually my parents just ask me for my T4 and that's it.

If I do it myself, what documents do I need? I'm just guessing my T4 and that student tuition one, and that's it?

I want to file already but I'm still waiting for my bank to spend me the info for all of my investments. Suppose to get it soon, early March I think.

Owing is a good thing! It means that CRA did NOT have your money too soon.

Absolutely, I just was lazy and didn't fax the form to have less tax taken off this year.

Liquid Turbo is absolutely correct. Getting excited that the govt is giving back your money is baffling ESPECIALLY if you ask to have extra deducted on each pay cheque.

Last year had about 7-8k back.

This year expecting about 10k. Payed about between 20-30k in taxes this year. Have to double check my t4.

I love tax return time, it's like the 13th months paycheck.

edit: if i had that money, it would have be long gone, so i thank them for keeping it for the year lol

If you're just a student and working a job you essentially just need your T4/T4A's... T5's for investments and TFSA's and RRSP's. Then your T2202A for tuition. If you purchase bus passes/translink passes etc you can also file to submit those along with any donations you've made throughout the year you can fill out schedule 9.

I usually don't do my own taxes... but I probably will this year.
