hey quick question; i've been following the progress on the reactor for the last 3 days because as you guys know, I posted that I had family and friends in Japan. I haven't read all the pages of the thread, and I don't know what search terms to look for on google, and I've checked BBC/CNN for some definitive answer. but... Did anyone come across any real information on what would happen to Tokyo should this thing meltdown?? My dad is an expat in China also and he's in Dalian, so does anyone know if this stuff could blow over eastwards? How much (if any) will Vancouver be affected by this? If anyone could clue me in, I'd appreciate it. |

This link was posted earlier in the thread, and seems to have decent, level-headed info regarding the plants: http://morgsatlarge.wordpress.com/20...lear-reactors/ |
norishikata Noriyuki SHIKATA Mr Edano : Water injection operations for Unit 1,2 and 3 are still ongoing. 14 seconds ago norishikata Noriyuki SHIKATA As for Unit 2, # of on-site workers has been reduced from 800 to 50, but injection of water is conitnuing. 19 minutes ago norishikata Noriyuki SHIKATA PM Kan says, as for the residents within radius of 10 km of Daini power plant, most residents have been evacuated, but full evacu. needed. 20 minutes ago norishikata Noriyuki SHIKATA PM Kan says, all the residents within the radius of 20 km need to evacuate ASAP. Those between 20 km and 30 km are requested to stay inside. 24 minutes ago norishikata Noriyuki SHIKATA Mr. Edano says, nuclear fuel itself is not causing the fire for Unit 4. We are trying to extinguish fire ASAP. 26 minutes ago |
Chun I think you should get as far away from there as you can |
^^^Good link, Presto! Blog moved here: http://mitnse.com/ |
This is where to go for the latest, level-headed news on the reactor situation: http://mitnse.com/ Includes the original blog post by the MIT guy. They are moving people away from the 20km radius as a precaution, in case something really bad does happen. |

here's a picture i just saw on reddit titled something like "cat survives tsunami", perhaps its wrong to be thinking about animals; im not, but i just thought this pic was good taken from a news station i suppose http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_li...25w2o1_500.jpg |
The radiation levels are about 200-300 microsieverts, peaking at about 2000 yesterday morning. A quick check at Wikipedia shows that it takes 1 sievert of full body exposure for 1 hour to become nautious. So 300 microsieverts is 0.0003, a long way from what it takes to become nautious at full body exposure. 3000 is 0.003 sieverts. Average background radiation we sit in just being on earth is about 2400 microsieverts per year (source). So if you were standing near the reactor right now, with no clothes on for 1 hour, it would be like being in your house for 1 month, in terms of radiation exposure. 3 sieverts = death in 50% cases, and 6 sieverts means you're gonna melt. So while there is radiation outside the reactor, it's nothing to worry about right now. |
^awwww .. (ref. to cat) |
