I have been using tethered 3G since moving to this place almost a month ago... We are supposedly getting a proper connection at the end of the month. That's what you get living in a VILLAGE, I guess ;)

I'm pretty happy with the speed though.. (my upload rate is the same as Shaw lol) it's about the same as my wired connection will be :okay:

I just don't like having my phone tied up as a wifi router all the time

i notice some of you are testing your speeds from areas in WA state? :crazy2: wouldn't that skew ur results

@skinny you cant use your phone when its tethering?

6insomnia9 07-10-2011 04:07 AM

Weird that my upload rate is so low..

I can technically use it, but it is better to leave it by a window for best reception (another problem with living in a THE VILLAGE - reception is sketchy), and leave it plugged in since wifi tethering drains the fuck out of the battery :)

StylinRed 07-10-2011 05:18 AM

^^ ah i see

that's great speed though it doesn't make sense :P

SkinnyPupp 07-10-2011 05:34 AM

It's actually slower than the true download speed using multiple streams. The highest I've seen it go is 11 Mbps. When I get my home connection, it'll be hard capped at 8 Mbps :okay:

StylinRed 07-10-2011 06:02 AM

rofl then why get a home connection :P

im on Wind with my phone and i can only get like 2.5mbps down and .5 up

SkinnyPupp 07-10-2011 06:30 AM

TBH I don't know if they are going to cap me or not. I purposefully signed for a more expensive "tethering" plan, but there is still the vague and arbitrary "fair use policy". I'm not sure if they are going to call at any time telling me that my use exceeds "fair use" whatever that is.

I haven't gotten my full bill yet, but I expect it to be at least 100 GB I think. We'll see!

Wired internet will be more stable, and in my experience of downloading 400-500GB of TV shows per month, has a pretty high limit :)

PCCW is truly the most horrible, rotten company I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. But the service they actually provide is very good, for a good price, so I stick with them. You just have to be very careful dealing with them, as they will scam you in ways that are completely illegal in most countries. (verbal contracts, trying to trick you into signing contract extensions, etc)

GodZilla 07-10-2011 08:51 AM

I have telus and it always goes down.
July 1st a rebar severed a cable by Commercial and Broadway and knocked out the internet. Only problem is I am by Brentwwod and it effected me there. wt ....

So is it true that shaw will replace the shitastic SMC with the (hopefully) better cisco product by this summer?

Eff-1 07-10-2011 03:06 PM

I'm downtown. It has been noticeably slower the past 2 or 3 days.

This afternoon looked like they did something because my connection was reset and I had to reset my router and modem to reconnect. But now it seems to be back to its old speed.

seakrait 07-10-2011 03:15 PM

not bad...

People that don't always get the advertised speed for example if you are on extreme and don't always get 25 mbp/s, keep in mind if you have a router and someone else in the house uses the internet it will decrease your overall speed.

cliffhanger33 07-10-2011 08:04 PM

Sometimes my internet gets so spikey and when I watch youtube vids its like:
