Got a Garmin 55 dashcam for Christmas and need to get around to installing it in my car. Read through a good chunk of this thread, but still had some questions as I have never used a dash cam previously. 1) Is it worth it to buy the dash cam parking mode cable (currently $40) to hardwire the dash cam to the car? Would also likely have to pay for someone to install it properly. 2) From what I have read, seems that Garmin's have trouble in the heat during summer. Although it doesn't get that hot in Vancouver, the inside of my car would sitting out in the parking lot at work... is it preferable to run the power from the cars cig lighter/standard power source and then place the dash cam in the glove box when not in use? Or just leave it plugged in all the time? |
1. depends on your car battery size, if you drive a compact car it might make sense to buy a battery pack instead if you decide to hardwire to the vehicle then get the OBD type, you dont need to pay anyone as it's popping off A pillar trim, tucking the wire in,done 2. leave it plugged in but buy appropriate SD cards that can take constant writes |

Leaving it constantly on (parking mode) is really up to your security preference. You're vulnerable to hit-and-runs if you're not recording while your car is parked. The downside to having it run all the time is that it constantly drains your car battery so it's longevity over time will fade. I personally leave mine plugged in all the time. I've already been a victim to several hit-and-runs when I was parked (and caught them all, lol). The only time I unplug my dashcam is when my car is completely safe in the garage. |

I'm currently using two Yi Dashcams, one front and one rear. Looking to upgrade them to something that has motion sensors. Anything out there that's budget friendly? Reason I'm asking was there was a day I was parked in Richmond, sitting inside my car eating lunch. Car got hit from the side. If I wasn't there, I'm positive that person would of ran off. |

Dumb question... what is a good SD card for 24/7 recording... I must have went thru a SD card every 2 to 3 month for god knows how long.... (always the $8-$10 - 16GB card from amazon/walmart/bestbuy) whichever is on sale.... I dont need a big card... just one that will last me ... I dunno a year? TY... Strange the cheapo SD card in the hyundai is fine.... but on the miata is chewing thru is like no tmrw |
Try one made for dashcam? https://carcamcentral.com/guide/reco...r-dash-cameras Takes a few years before I kill an SD card. |
Sandisk High Endurance are good for the price, have one in my U1000 that has been doing fine running almost 24/7 |
No accident, but felt like I needed to share this wonderfully skilled driver from today. |
What happened to the shitty drivers video thread? |
Oops, thats the thread I was looking for. Well then, too keep it on topic. This is from my old ass G1W rocking a 8gb kingston card. Works fine I guess, but feel like should invest into something newer now |
No I mean actually what happened to it? I can't find it anymore. |
It's in the NSFW section for some odd reason |
wow a bmw driver using their signals, thats odd. |

Anecdotal evidence, but it's the only card I trust anymore. Good price and seems to slip under the radar since no one mentions them. I went through a lot of highly recommended cards (at least 2x each) including multiple Evo Plus and A1 and they all crapped out on me under a year. I probably went through over 7 cards in a span of 5 years. TBH, seems to be hit and miss though, cards that crapped out on me has also worked wonders for others. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm using the BlackVue DR650's. |

not even a year later piece of shit keeps rebooting even on stock firmware/stock sd card :fuuuuu: |
wait for it.... |
was it the standard issue ford explorer? |
i have a rexing v1p 3rd gen, front and rear cam. It's hardwired to an auxiliary battery so it's always on and doesn't drain my car's battery. |
What’s everyone using for a dash cam these days? Looking at replacing my DR400G with something newer. |
