i disagree, with that logic in mind, you could say that about any company. yes they don't do the actual hands on work, but they are able to bring the people that can together. Their ability to motivate coupled with their vision, directions, and decisions that can make a company millions or lose em. Not every person is made out to be a CEO.

LiquidTurbo 08-24-2011 07:18 PM

Do you know how much of a micromanager Steve Jobs was? He had a handle in just about everything, even the food selection for company events. To say he was just a face of the company and did nothing to get it to its success today.. is just plain ignorant.

or maybe he already did

and this is just a damage control ploy by slowly easing into it

after all he hasn't made any public appearances and his biography was already released etc

He may as well be dead, considering how people are talking about him.

Why would anyone other than shareholders care who the CEO of apple is?

I really wish this were true, I hope he atleast fights off his sickness.

Steve Jobs is the ultimate underdog story, he got kicked out of his own company, came back and brought it to prominence. Even his side project Pixar turned out to be a huge player in the entertainment industry (even banishing his long time nemesis Michael D. Eisner in the process).

Regardless I wish him well, but as of tonight it's an end of an era.

Apple's Greatest Hits and Misses

fs604 08-24-2011 07:59 PM

good time to invest. like others have said, when iphone 5 comes out, prices will rise just like it did with 4.

StylinRed 08-24-2011 08:44 PM

they should appoint The Woz as CEO and get some real innovations out there not just rebadging existing products

since they wont have Jobs sell factor they'll need real products

Wozniak reflects on Apple co-founder's decision

Wozniak told Bloomberg Television that Jobs has proven himself to be "the greatest technical leader we've ever seen in our lifetime," and also helped Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) become "well-managed, in a financial sense."

"He's been behind the iPhone," Wozniak said. "My God. That's the device of our lifetime."

Wozniak said he does not speak with Jobs on a regular basis and has only common knowledge about Jobs' health. He also said he supports Apple's famed culture of secrecy surrounding products under development, and Apple’s ability to surprise people with products helps fuel its success.

Wozniak also said that in Apple's early days, Jobs "wanted to be an important person in the world" by having a successful company.

"Apple only lost money when they made crappy products that couldn't sell," Wozniak told Bloomberg.

Aww shame guess Jobs' fuckover really cut deep

I don't think he cares that much about the money. Once you hit a billion dollars, another billion dollars or so doesn't satisfy you as much as the previous.

Cause as much as I hate their corporate policy, Jobs has proven time and time again he can get it done and is willing to push the technical boundary to do so. And that now Apple is the undeniable market leader in mobile consumer electronics, all eyes will be looking to them for future trends.

So regardless of whether I buy an Apple product or not, the truth of the matter is the next iPhone and the next one after that will determine what kind of phone I get. Without them, we'd all still be using regular phones.

On the other hand, without Apple, mp3 players would still sound awesome and companies like iRiver and Cowon would still thrive.

So who cares? I care and so should you if you like fancy mobile toys.

k3mps 08-24-2011 10:49 PM

I don't think his reputation is very well known with the younger crowd (grade 7 and 8's).
When i was coaching high school basketball, when he took a leave for health, i asked the team what they thought of him during a water break.
All of them said "well he's just a ceo, all he does it manage a company'.
They don't seem to understand that although at the time he was a CEO, he created revolutionary technology.
If you ask the youth, such as juniors in high school, what Steve Jobs has done in his life, they will just say "manage a company, made the ipod", even though he did SO much more than that.

I had phones with more features than the iPhone a good 3 years before the iPhone ever existed, so don't try to tell me that they are "pushing technical boundaries" and shit like that.

The only thing Steve Jobs is good at is marketing. Now, he is the MASTER at it, and has actually built a CULT around a COMPANY, but that's about it. There is nothing that special about their products, once you evaluate them critically.

Culverin 08-25-2011 02:49 AM

My bad, I shouldn't have said pushing the technical boundaries, in so much as pushing the boundary of what is mainstream.

I'm as much an apple hater as anybody out there, but even I have to admit because they control everything so carefully, there is a level of "out of the box" integration that no other companies seemed to have pulled off.

geeknerd 08-25-2011 05:20 AM

they only control those who are dumb enough to fall for it.

2004 was the year I got my first cellphone ever, the Sony Ericson T610 with its 0.1 mP camera or whatever.

What phone in 2004 was better than the original iPhone?

LiquidTurbo 08-25-2011 07:33 AM

Regardless, I'm excited for the new Steve Jobs release..

Faster, Thinner, Lighter, and maybe a white sweater this time :D

twitchyzero 08-25-2011 07:59 AM

iPhone concept was conceived in 2005 i believe..but didn't come out until 2007
edit: oops you were referring to SP's post

SkinnyPupp 08-25-2011 08:01 AM

Yup in 2005 we were using Windows Mobile phones, with many of the same features the iphone came out with. The only thing the iphone really added (and it is a very important thing) is a centralized app store that is heavily integrated.

BTW you wouldn't believe how expensive data plans were back then

I remember Bell had $25/4MB

LOL, I remember my windows mobile device. That thing crashed 5 times a day, the reset button was getting a heck of a work over lol. Thing looks ugly as well, cheap plastic as well as being bulky and thick.

Then a swapped to Palm Treo, and for once it didn't crash, but installing apps was ridiculously tedious and programs left all sorts of files everywhere. But at least it didn't crash.

Too bad Palm didn't keep their game up and kept their archaic OS for too long:okay:

SkinnyPupp 08-25-2011 09:58 AM

Windows Mobile wasn't that bad, provided you got a device with enough RAM. That goes for any device really... If there is one part you don't want to skimp out on, it's RAM.
