Banff is indeed beautiful though lol. I just never appreciated it as a kid.

15+ years ago Canmore was really great, it was like Banff without the downsides (no congestion, parking, less people, etc). Went there about 8 years ago and it was still nice but boy did it have way more construction/growth (IMO). Would still rather stay there and drive 20 min over to Banff than stay in Banff directly.

From someone on reddit who did the math, FWIW. Obviously, details can vary with price of home, how much a person makes (single/married/how many kids), how much down, etc. Anyhow, you can create a scenario, plug in numbers and show me how it is so much different today than it was in the 80's.

Average price 1980 of single detached = $180,000, in 2023 = $1,956,000 (looking primarily at the Hotspot of Vancouver)

Interest high 1981 = 19.29%. If entire cost is mortgage, it works out to roughly $2917/mth at 25y amortization. Average family income is 30K, so 12x2917 / 30K = 116% or so going to home

Let's look at 2023. Interest now is 6.04. Lets buy a steal of a property at 1.5M. The payment is now $9701, same amortization. Average family income is 110k. 12x9701 / 110k = 105% of income going to home.

That math doesn't work :lol

It doesn't even take into account the down payment needed, and how long that takes to amass. Also neglects the other inflationary costs of current goods, education nowadays, etc.

It's not a simple conclusion to make with just the above.

Canmore is the one place in Alberta with similar housing prices as Vancouver proper.

I wish I was joking :rukidding:

Out of curiosity, I looked up the price for one night at Chateau Lake Louise during Xmas. It's a whopping $450 per night for their cheapest room. I suppose that shouldn't shock me but man, so much for that. I guess it'll just be a day trip if we visit Banff this Christmas (gf has never been).

Summertime the rates go to $2k.. you cant drive to lake louise anymore unless you are a hotel guest and have to take a shuttle.

westopher 10-14-2025 08:42 PM

$450 a night over christmas seems insanely cheap tbh.

whitev70r 10-14-2025 08:44 PM

It's over $500/nt here at Chateau Fairmont Waterfront in October!

I believe every word that mikeymhg says ... how dare you fukkers ruin my faith and trust in reddit ... :banghead:

spoon.ek9 10-14-2025 09:04 PM

Yeah I heard something about the ban on local driving. Maybe $450 is "cheap" but I ain't paying that for a local trip lol.

westopher 10-14-2025 09:08 PM

I haven’t seen a decent hotel under $350 in the last 3 years.

spoon.ek9 10-14-2025 09:20 PM

Depends on your definition of decent I suppose. Also depends on which country you're visiting. Japan for example, $350 is high and would give you a ton of options.

westopher 10-14-2025 09:42 PM

I'm just talking about any vacation destination in Canada.

BIC_BAWS 10-14-2025 09:44 PM

Sooo experts of RS, my buddy gave me this smoked fish and I didn't think to refrigerate it. It's vacuum sealed still but I left it under my desk (in a basement) for the last two months.

Should I eat it? Do I feed my family this? Are we all gonna get botulism and turn into vegetables?

westopher 10-14-2025 09:59 PM

If I did it myself. I’d trust it more, but I still wouldn’t do it. Rationally, and scientifically, if it was cured and smoked properly it’s safe. It was a technique for centuries for preserving.
I just don’t care to risk it.
So as an answer, it’s probably fine, but it’s not something I’d risk after sitting under a table, and not in a proper cool room.

I hated the 981 GTS I tracked - terrible steering feel.
991 Cup car was way beyond my skill level, esp with braking.

Think I would enjoy a GT4 RS?
I'm in Atlanta, and Porsche Drivingt experiecnce is offering a 90 minute session for $1450.

Great68 10-15-2025 07:06 AM

That's a big nope to that salmon. Smoked salmon like that has far too much moisture to be shelf stable through home processes. (It's not jerky)

To be safe un-refrigerated it would have had to been heat treated (basically pasteurized) after it was put in the package.
This is what all the commercially smoked salmon goes through.

do it! the cars themselves are pretty much faultless, its just the price they are asking for them, the boring ass looks, the stupid community that surrounds them, and the gay ass "clout" factor that makes modern porsches the ultimate poser car.
