Some Shell gas station in Surrey has gas for 10 cents a litre but only for an hour. Too far for me to make it in time.

it's one thing if it happened due to gross negligence... but this just seems like a tragic incident
nothing he did was illegal (that we know of) and as a pilot he's as experienced as they come, so unless you ban airshows from populated areas altogether, these things will happen rare as they may be

...on a lighter note, kid trips and punches a hole through a $2 million dollar painting

Quote:
A $2-million masterpiece by a 17th century Italian artist was back on display in the Taiwan capital on Tuesday after a 12-year-old boy tripped, fell and punched a hole in the canvas, the exhibit organizer said.

Still Life of Flowers by Italian master Paolo Porpora is part of a Taipei exhibit showcasing artwork painted by or influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, according to organizer David Sun.

"It was such an unusual accident," Sun said. "The boy was listening to the guide and wasn't looking where he was going, and tripped and smashed a hole in the artwork."

Sun said the boy and his family had expressed sincere regret and won't face any punishment.

"We had an Italian appraiser on hand and immediately contacted the collector," Sun said.

"We decided to repair the painting immediately on site and it's back on display already."

The painting has been valued at about $1.5 million US.

Question for everyone regarding duty and taxes from buying something from the UK...

So my soccer team wants new jerseys, I've found a style we all want, and would be ordering it from Pro Direct Soccer out of the UK. What I'm confused about is if we'd definitely absolutely be paying duty and taxes for them. I've had teammates order new cleats and things from Pro Direct and they didn't pay anything extra, but that's only for a few items instead of 14 jerseys (difference in item quantity and price). I checked out the CBSA website but it still left me wondering. Anybody have any ideas?

It might depend on where they are made, or how it was shipped. Either phone up CBSA to be sure, or assume that you will be paying for it and be pleasantly surprised if you aren't?

Honestly it depends on who the company ship it with.. (then how much is the net cost of the order)..

Commercial shippers (Fedex, UPS etc) with get you to pay taxes because they just have to.. If by Royal Mail because CBSA handles the tax collection for incoming mail.. it will be hit and miss.

Duty will depend on the origin of your item (if via commercial shipper).
Taxes GST/PST will be charged always by commercial shippers..

Royal Mail -> Canada Post both is maybe depending on the cost.

Do not get them shipped via UPS, their brokerage charges are outrageous and you will be hit with a large lump sum for brokerage.

Typically anything under ~$200 doesnt get charged duties when shipped via Canada Post. I always get my seller to ship via postmail, so it come by Canada Post. Most of the time I never pay duties. The only time i'm guaranteed duties is when shipping via large carrier(Puro,UPS,DHL,Fedex).

That being said, since you're ordering a large amount of jerseys you will most likely have to pay duties.

Wait But Why

I love the articles that this guy publishes. He boils down difficult topics into easy-to-read (sometimes long-ass) articles. For example, he's doing a series on Elon Musk and explains the reasoning to electric vehicles and space exploration. Have a read if you're bored!

If the company will not ship via their equivalent of Canada post or USPS then better not order. Like the other guys said, you will get hit hard for brokerage fees

^ supposedly there's a way around it by paying the duty at a customs office yourself, then you show UPS or whoever the receipt and they can't charge you the extra brokerage and duty. I'm not sure how to find out where all the customs offices are but I know every international airport will have one.

$50 vs
1. You have to call ahead to UPS to make sure the package hasn't cleared electronically yet.
2. You have to head down to UPS depot at the airport (Ferguson Dr. on the way to Iona Beach).. drive to the other side of the airport Miller Rd. get it cleared.
3. Back to UPS either pick up the package or wait for them to deliver.
4. Oh and deal with Richmond traffic

Sounds like it's more of a hassle down there than it is up here. Still, nice to have a way to avoid UPS' inflated fees if you aren't able to avoid them.
