that's the thing, people don't understand that white privilege doesnt mean your life is automatically better. it means the colour of your skin didn't give you any disadvantages.

Years ago, in a bit of frustration, I went through the leadership teams of most of the tech companies headquartered in Vancouver to document their gender and ethnicity mix. Even for a city as diverse as Vancouver (about 50% visible minority) the white guys dominated the leadership ranks. I don't have the numbers anymore but I think it was something like 80-85% of the leadership roles were held by white people with nearly all of those held by men.

I remember my white male CEO at the time rejecting a female exec candidate who was highly qualified and well regarded in the community b/c he didn't vibe with her (understandable) but his leadership team, for quite a while (and even a bit today), is full of dudes that look like him. This female exec did go on to even bigger things - she's a VP at a many billion dollars company now.

I'm pretty senior in my industry (but not an accountant) and I've had many conversations with more junior Asian employees who point out how rare it is that someone like "us" gets to be in a leadership role because "they don't usually let us have these jobs" (real words) or "they don't usually recognise us" (real words). Maybe you haven't had those convos with people but I've had plenty and it hurts every time I have to console them.

White males still got all the power even in a town like Vancouver.

Edit: I did find the numbers - out of 98 execs I looked at in 2017 only 11 were minorities (and there were 23 women). These were companies that were started in Vancouver and were at the time headquartered in Vancouver.

This. The CEO is probably thinking "I never got any help in my career success, I struggled and worked hard like these people, why should they get special treatment? I never got any and I did just fine and got there solely because of my own capabilities"

But they don't realize that being a white male is fundamentally"special treatment", particularly when you compare it to women or minorities in business, because it's difficult to understand and feel what you don't experience.

And it also discounts the efforts they made (or that they think they made) to achieve that success and that threatens the belief of their own ability.

i had to explain this to a coworker that thought white privilege is bullshit because his sister has a disability. honestly its exhausting sometimes having to repeat this type of stuff over and over to people. just like toxic masculinity, people just hear the phrase and think its an attack on men in general. has nothing to do with men being toxic. why is it our job to educate these types of people.

I think the higher you go the more advantageous it gets. For the lower level jobs is being white even an advantage anymore? Maybe at some racist mom and pop shop but at a huge company? While the white CEO sits on top they are doing more 'diversity hiring' on the bottom end jobs so if you're white and your skills are limited are you getting picked for that entry level position when the company is looking to diversify their workforce?

It's not a golden ticket for everyone but the higher up you are the more being white gives you a leg up most definitely.

The point isn't about high level or low level, it is the whole thing that you are describing, that's why they call it systemic discrimination. The system makes it so it is the white CEO at the top.

Just like how certain lower level jobs may suit the "model minority" more because of the stereotype that these people work hard, and don't complain, and so they get a better chance at those roles vs Chad who can't make it in today coz he's nursing a wicked hangover.

On the flip side the system believes that upper level roles suit the Wolf of Wall Street, Suits-looking stereotypical "white male" and so they get a better chance at those roles.

Which then takes you down a whole rabbit hole of why representation in the media matters.

I think something to remember is that just because "the whites" are losing some of that free opportunity they had for so long now, doesn't mean it's gonna change quickly. There's generations of shit left over from the wealth and connections that were built up in the white washed social side of business. It's just like how indigenous people will be living through the issues created by their oppression long after they are treated as equals, which still hasn't even happened yet.

People low on the totem pole leaving their cameras on, people coming on cam to make jokes with no audio or forgetting to unmute and then forgetting to mute while eating chips... people explaining every detail of their work barely taking a breath for 10 solid minutes before cutting themselves off trying to share a screen... a guy in Newfoundland talking and nobody could understand a word he said... Half the people talking or answering in French so nobody else can understand what they're saying....

A number of years ago my former boss hired a guy, a recent immigrant. I won't say where from but had a masters in electrical engineering from that country.

He got hired for a pretty low totem pole job, bascially drawings/drafting & documentation, basically stuff that should be like super easy for the qualifications he had.

It fell to me to basically teach him his job, and it was a struggle man. He just couldn't pick up what I would tell him via spoken word.
I basically resorted to constantly typing and explaining everything in emails, it made the process so slow and difficult.

I mean he was a nice guy, but it was a massive drag and it made things horribly inefficient. He eventually left, and that was a relief but realistically he should have been identified as a bad fit and let go a long time before he left (My boss was just too "nice guy" himself)

University "degrees" from 2 particular countries that have a lot of people immigrating to Canada are often totally useless. I've dealt with people like that in the past as well, and I'd say the amount of relevant technical knowledge they have for the position they are in is practically zero. I'd roughly put them equivalent to what an average local highschool grad would know, which is practically nothing, but then you wouldn't be having the highschool grad working in that position / in that capacity.

On topic of useless / questionable people at companies

We sub contract alot of trades, the best of the best:

Roofers: they attach their fall protection to rooftop unit gas lines

Coring: you mark a 8x8 hole to be cut, and it needs to be within a 10x10 mark you laid out. Because everything past the 10x10 is structural. (After you spent 1500$ on an engineer to sign off, and another 600$ for a scan.)
You show up after they cored it, and sure enough, they cored it outside the 10x10 mark somehow.

Coring v2: they core into a parkade, and leave all the material, water, and the mess for you to clean up

Electricians: you ask to run electrical to a unit. They run their conduit, or electrical box, blocking off access to open the unit door.

Engineers: they design hvac systems so there is no access to open doors, once it's installed it doesn't need servicing right...right?!?!??
The ongoing joke here is an HVAC banged an engineer's wife, so since then it's been payback.

Painters: these guys are GODS at painting over nameplate data on units.

Store clerks at supply houses +HVAC apprentices: you ask for 10 parts, and half of them are wrong on pick up.
Bonus points if your apprentice picks up the parts, and shows up to site 1hr away with said parts.
Extra bonus points if you show your apprentice the list you ordered, asked them to check said list on pickup, and they still show up with the wrong parts.

Man I wish I had my old phone with pre 2017 photos. We now have a "hall of fame" at our office with photos of stupid shit we see on the job. YouTube / Reddit quality stuff. (Yes half of it is our own HVAC guys doing QUALITY degenerate shit)

Well plenty of incompetent people are hired because they are someone's son or because they got excellent marks because of a "donation" to the school.

Depends where you work.

For large business, it’s a very fine balance. You want diversity hires because in the long run you may attract the top tier applicant because of that diversity.

On the flip side, when you intentionally hire diversity to fill a quota over the best candidate, you just create all sorts of problems internally.

I’ve seen both and the latter generally turns out very ugly.
