I can barely remember it now but I'm pretty sure I punched my dad in the face one time when he was taunting me about my balled up fists.
I somehow had both an atypical and typical asian childhood.

In communist russia grandma is always telling you to eat food and giving you food, even after telling grandma you dont want food, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 times within the span of a hour.
Then my mom would also constantly ask me if i want to eat, then give food without me wanting any / telling her im not hungry
When i was like 16 or 17, i think she asked me like 4 times in the span of an hour if i wanted to eat, and each time i told her i dont want to eat anything.
So what does she do? She makes chicken and gives me a bowl.
I took the bowl and furiously whipped the entire bowl of chicken across the kitchen. It was little baghdad, pieces of chicken everywhere. (Did not throw the actual bowl)
She looked at me, stunned, then stormed off crying, and did not talk to me for 2 weeks for the first time in my life.
Im laughing writing this
Did it work? Yup. She never asked twice, ever again.

He was beat with a wooden spoon, we told him about feather dusters.
He was confused about it. "But they're so fluffy."
"You're holding it the wrong way around," we told him. I was in my teens before I knew what the english words were for the feather duster, how they were typically used, and which end other people held them.

Did anyone enter the FIFA lottery for a chance to purchase tickets and have won? I haven't heard anything since the deadline to enter.

I'm convinced that unless you are paying big $$$ for the tickets (or that right to buy garbage), your chances of scoring some tickets for the local games is really about as good as winning the lottery.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the CanadaRed program expects a 1% chance of winning a ticket at the free tier, 3 - 5% at the $50 paid tier, and something higher still for the $150 tier?
Paying $150 just for the chance to buy a ticket? Fxxk that.

Not getting my hopes up of getting anything on later chances. My only hope and a wishful one at that is we draw a shitty ass game at BC Place where people try to dump and I can get reasonably priced tickets on the secondary market of the sake of saying I went to the world cup. Its more for my son, he loves soccer and while I've always been disgusted at watching it either live or on TV I've taken him to quite a few games the last 2 years and we even went to one on our Japan trip recently which was the craziest game we've experienced atoposhere wise. So I've grown in my tolerance to watch and it would check off another memory we get to share.

IMO the bar to live a good life in van isn't that high, but the rules have changed.
4-yr degree to guaranteed $50k is dead.
BCIT 2 year certs that get you $100k boilermaker job is alive.
Summer vibes are dead.
Internships and founding businesses is critical.
Social/AI can rot you or teach you anything.
New grads are more often founders than full time employees.
A lot in recent Beedie cohort have hit $4M rev in year 1.

My mom used a hockey stick. I hid my baseball bat from plain sight. Never used my $1.49 Woodwards badminton racket - too flimsy.............. she was barely 5 foot tall and never went to town with it, but the look on her face and holding whatever in her hand was enough to scare the bejesus out of me. "Wait till your father comes back." was the ultimate scare tactic.

Asian kids getting beaten is a time honoured tradition. Too many uppity kids nowadays, not enough beatings. I told my brother in law I’ll beat his kid for free since he’s too pussy ass to do it.

what are everyone's thoughts on that nowadays? I'm not a parent yet but I feel like I would do things in tiers.
Tier 1: discussion, try to make them understand what they've done wrong
Tier 2: take away privileges as necessary (phone, tv, internet etc)
Tier 3: depending on age/situation of course, but if things escalate to this level I do think some punishment is necessary. Some kids just won't listen otherwise.
One crazy ass girl I was with briefly said she would never punish kids in anyway, shape or form. She was of the thinking that no matter what age, you can get them to understand (lol good fucking luck). She wouldn't even consider Tier 2 because she said it never worked on her growing up.

I got beat too not sure how common it was with white parents... I don't have a problem with it looking back except for 1 caveat... like... it has to make sense? If I had a criticism of my dad it was that he emotionally beat on us at times when he was just frustrated with his life and we were wrong place wrong time... like one time a milk container slipped out of my hand and hit the floor and spilled and he beat me with a stick for that and that made no sense to me, I didn't intentionally drop the milk etc.... but like if I did something intentional then ok sure. That type of thing?
I know one thing almost everyone here probably has to deal with is watching them go completely fucking toothless against their grandkids after they went on us for anything... my dad was so strict, had to wear socks always because oils in our feet would wreck the carpets, couldn't eat anywhere except the table blah blah blah just an insane number of crazy rules and then my sister has kids and it's like free for all for them, gives them whatever they want, drives them anywhere they want to go I had to walk or bicycle no matter how far it was lol

Discipline and violence against kids is very different. My grandma smacked me on the ass with the wooden spoon but never for something trivial or like if I wouldn’t stop crying or some shit.
You gotta tread the line of discipline carefully though, because you can’t raise kids that are afraid to tell you when they fuck up. Like I want my teenager to be able to tell me she fucked up and I can help her fix it when she’s older, not be afraid of the consequences from me and make the situation worse because she doesn’t have the tools to handle the situation.
Too much discipline raises liars, because they fear you.

Too much discipline raises liars, because they fear you. | yeah, for sure. it's not about having them fear you, you're trying to raise them to be decent human beings that will contribute something to society. they have to grow up knowing there are consequences for bad behaviour. the kids who grew up with none of that are the ones who are total assholes today (guy or girl, rich or poor). if i'm going to be a parent, i'm going to do everything i can to make sure they grow up right. what they do as an adult will be on them, but i sure ain't raising no messed up kids who don't know respect, discipline and gratefulness.
