If by tree hugging, you mean we hugged them to death then OK.

I don't really hate anything about or city.. We don't live in a perfect world so there's always something to bitch about.

I agree to a lot of what people say about how Vancouver doesn't have the same amount of culture as other cities around the world, but we do have amazing art at the same time - some amazing festivals, some amazing local artists, some amazing amateur theatre productions around the city.
I'd say Vancouver has the second largest amount of culture in this country. If you've ever lived in edmonton, saskatoon, regina, winnipeg, calgary, halifax, ottawa, or st.johns then you would know what I'm talking about. But obviously it doesn't compare to some of the world cities already listed in this thread.

It is also good to note that vancouver was barely a blip on the radar 20 years ago. Amazing how much this city has developed in the last 10 years alone. Yaletown didn't even exist! More then half the cities skyscrapers weren't even in planning mode.

Vancouver should be 4th or 5th. Montreal has the most, Toronto is probably 2nd and I would say that Ottawa would be 3rd.

IMHO, it forces you to step up your game further. When you go to other countries with the creative things you learned to do approach/impress women here, you're unstoppable.

Calgary is nothing but suburbs and one dimensional oil tycoons. They spawned nickelback which is a pretty big representation of their culture. Ottawa is about as exciting as a block of wood.

people who don't appreciate what this city offers.
i hate some cyclists - but i'm glad for the good roads.
i hate the rain - but im glad when it turns into snow and the mountains are my playground.
etc..etc..

To everyone who complains about the bad drivers, try living in a different city. Every metropolis has terrible drivers or terrible infrastructure. There is no perfect road or transit system on this planet, nor is there a perfect place for drivers either.

Anal about what exactly, I have never viewed Vancouverites as a whole to be obsessive or overly detail oriented?

While reading an automotive forum, it makes sense that individuals feign over pictures of exotic cars. I have yet to witness a Vancouverite having any more than a subtle reaction to exotic car in person.

There is a limited number of high end fashion retailers in Vancouver, but again, that comes down to population size. A city of 2.5 million people cannot support the same number of retailers in that niche market as larger American cities, that's a simple fact.

Vancouver has an art scene with enough depth for all but pompous aficionados of self-importance to enjoy. Of course, it does not compare to Paris, London or New York but with a fifth of the population and several centuries of catching up to do I would consider it more than respectable. If Vancouver has no art, what exactly is being displayed in this short list of galleries?

Jacana Contemporary Art
Vancouver Art Gallery
Bau-Xi Gallery
Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery
Dianne Farris Gallery
Monte Clark Gallery
Bill Reid Gallery
Lattimer Gallery
Douglas Reynolds Gallery

The joie de vivre I feel living in Vancouver is immense, I can only attribute that to the incredible beauty that surrounds the city in every direction and that is of a far higher importance to myself than any superficial complaints. As stated earlier in this thread, where else can you go snow boarding and visit an ocean beach in the same day.
wow never knew people know about the bau-xi gallery..... i am great friends with the chinese owner and he is a wonderful man and I am glad to see it's name here

+thanks

lol that's definitely what i always thought about calgary, but some friends moved there and it completely changed their mind. So i was wondering if it's one of those places that everyone thinks sucks, but is actually pretty decent. I just don't see that with ottawa though, as a government town :-p

100000% agree on nickelback lol

I don't think this is true it's a choice for the most part. Most parents I know would tell there kids go to school or get a job and pay rent but not all. I was never forced out of my parents house and I was never asked to pay rent but I choose to leave around 20. I think generally speaking caucasian children aren't as reliant on their parents as say asians or EI's which is why you see them moving out earlier. There are always exceptions to the rule though on either side of the coin.

Most of my friends are white and none of them moved out at 18 or to a different province because he couldn't afford to live on his own.
