In Utorrent change the number of connections to a lower amount. Click options then preferences and then bandwidth.

Ouch, when I use to use BitTorrent I noticed that Shaw tends to throttle during 5-7ish. Either that or the nodes were just congested during prime-time browsing.

Funny you should ask this now - LifeHacker just posted an article on ISPs throttling BitTorrent: Find Out Which ISPs Are the Biggest BitTorrent Throttlers

Quote:
Canada

In Canada, all large ISPs have admitted to slowing down BitTorrent traffic, and some do so to a great extent. Since the start of the measurements Rogers has continuously throttled more than three-quarter of all BitTorrent traffic, and there are no signs that this will stop.

During the first quarter of 2010 the two other large Canadian ISPs, Bell and Shaw, were throttling 16 and 14 percent respectively. Videotron on the other hand has never slowed down more than 7 percent, and only 3 percent during the last measurement year.

Worst: Rogers (78%)
Best: Videotron (3%)

i'm with shaw and i don't have any problem with torrent. Sound like the problem is either coming from your anti virus software or firewall setting. Had this happened to me once. Try disable some setting in there one by one until you find the source.

Do you have utorrent encryption turned on? My internet and torrents are always fast. I've gotten a torrent at 3MB/s download at one time while still surfing fine. In addition to the encryption I also cap my upload bandwidth to 15KB/s max

i'm gonna take a wild guess and say it might have to do with you router and QoS, i had the same problem you're having without a router. i've used a 655 for couple years now and it's been all good with Shaw.

torrent speeds can vary wildly depending on where your seeds are. Sometimes they total just under 2mb/sec with stuff from demonoid or tpb, i've also had stuff from china that constantly stays at <10kb/sec.

I'm on Shaw Extreme and I can confirm the 14% throttle.

Torrenting, I have never seen a speed higher than 2.7MBps = 21.6Mbps.

1-(21.6/25)*100 = 13.8% throttled, where 21.6 is my "real" speed, and 25 is the advertised speed.

I kinda doubt that's entirely throttling, considering 4-5%ish on top of that speed is probably IP headers, and i'm sure there's probably quite a decent amount of control traffic for torrenting, and you'll never get the full 25mbps down to the last bit anyways.

Telus definitely does rate limiting for regular downloads, don't know about torrents. I generally just use a certain file hosting website to download everything from, which i always get about 14.6mbps from (incl headers). I downloaded about 20GB a day on monday/tuesday/wednesday at full speed, and come thursday i started a download and get 60KB/s, but only from that site, everything else was fine. Except, i was watching my bytes downloaded go... 256KB.. pause ..512KB.. pause ..768KB.. pause.. 1024KB. So at that point it was painfully obvious what telus was doing, so i just turned on my work VPN and sure enough was back to 1.5MB/s once telus couldn't identify the traffic.

Correct. That's no way to tell cause torrent speeds are all over the place. There's no way you can maintain a 25mbps on shaw extreme from most of the sites online.

^ all my torrents are off private trackers. I DL usually at a constant 2.3-2.5MB/s . 2.7 is the max that I have seen it and thus I used that value in my calculation.

Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.
