fail, just missed the sale. Looking for a good 24inch monitor to use with my laptop

Araaadi 08-30-2012 09:57 AM

hey guys , so the u2412m is on sale again, but that monitor doesn't do hdmi and my laptop doesnt have a vga or dvi port. any recommendations for another good 24inch monitor for that price.

dyan 08-30-2012 10:16 AM

you could always pick up a dvi to hdmi converter

Araaadi 09-02-2012 05:09 PM

Thinking about just doing that, but I also found the Asus PA248Q, what do you guys think of that monitor?

twitchyzero 09-03-2012 12:55 AM

psst i may have something cheaper than the ProArt 248Q shameless plug :troll:

but to answer your question the HDMI and 4 USB 3.0 makes the ASUS look great...if you do design work the measurement notches on the bezel is a bonus. Otherwise just buy whatever is cheaper as they are more than likely using the same 6-bit LG panels.

Dell definitely has the better warranty though and so I would get that when it goes for the sub $300 price

twitchyzero 12-31-2012 10:45 AM

u2412hm $250 again today
u2413 is apparent coming in janurary

I bought the U2410 a few weeks ago when it was on sale. I've been reading about how great this monitor is for well over a year. I guess I bought the hype so much that I was expecting unicorns and rainbows to shoot out of the thing when I fired it up.

Really, it's just a monitor. Not much different than my 4 year-old 21.5" LG monitor that it replaced. Just bigger. Anti-glare is nice. I guess my eyes can't tell the difference between this IPS and whatever monitor type I had before it.

I'm not saying this to spite others who champion the U2410. I'm just being honest so other potential owners lower their expectations, and possibly even consider a cheaper monitor. I wouldn't spend the $400+ again on this monitor had I the chance to reconsider.

edit: I should also mention that I don't take advantage of what this monitor is supposedly geared towards, EG: photo editing, or whatever else that needs color accuracy. It's just a monitor I use for regular, everyday stuff like youtube and watching shows/movies.

It's pretty easy to tell the difference between IPS and TN+F for me and pretty much anyone who goes from an TN+F to an IPS monitor and back to a TN+F will say the same thing; TN+F sucks.

Now, do you need this particular monitor? It depends on your usage. As mentioned, for anything colour critical, a high-quality monitor such as this and the proper calibration equipment is a must, but for your average joe, a lesser IPS monitor and software calibration is more than adequate. With IPS monitors so cheap now (You can find 23" IPS monitors for $150 or less these days.), I don't see why anyone would ever go with a TN panel unless it's simply out of sheer ignorance.

twitchyzero 12-31-2012 03:47 PM

for me ips is almost as vivid as CRT monitors and TN just seems to have washed out colours now...the difference was preetty big when I made the switch.

a true 8-bit panel's colour reproduction (ie. U2410) will really benefit from proper calibration

Just verifying, is this calibrated custom settings for U2410?
-------------------

I have the U2410 myself and I like it as well. I think the colors can look better if I had it calibrated since I'm running the default standard. I read on other threads it needs to be setup properly since it's a 12-bit monitor.

I also have the U2407 and it also still up and running as well.

The U2413 I may look forward to since that is coming soon. LED as well.

Just a little update.

For the U2410, don't use custom preset, it will look wrong, which I actually tried.

I manage to follow this post and got it dead on as it now looks identical to my other Dell Ultrasharp monitors (2407, 2209 and 23" one).

I basically used an i1 Display Pro and went into the factory menu settings and adjusted the preset for standard to get it to match the white level as accurate as possible, then profiled it.

best bang for buck 24" right now?

nsmb 03-10-2013 01:26 PM

the U3011 is on sale for 979$. is it worth the extra $$ over a 2560X1440 monitor in the $700 range? ieLS27A850DS

twitchyzero 03-10-2013 01:33 PM

wasn't the 27" 1440p dell ips $570 the other day? I'd pick that up in a heart beat over a $1k u3011
