My cousin who lives a few blocks from me says his reception is fine throughout the city.

How would I be able to try it out? It seems like you can have a two week trial to just check reception, but that's if you don't make any calls or use any data?

Fixed for you. It's whichever comes first.

No cap on texting or data. Just talk time or trial period. So if you use up 31 mins in a day, sorry there goes your trial period

I'll probably get the $35 smartphone plan since I'm always on WiFi. The bulk of my current 6GB data plan on Rogers usually goes to YouTube/Facebook (which I can just cut out if I'm not on WiFi).

Does anyone have any sort of benchmarks of regular data speeds vs post-cap throttled data speeds?

In addition, I am looking at the WindTAB pricings for like the G4.

It's $499 on the WindTAB, but $0 if I do the $25 WindTAB Boost. If I calculate 25 * 24 = $600 so aren't people overpaying? Putting the $499 on a credit card is going to end up about $600 after interest assuming you don't pay it all off at the end of the year.

But anyways.. I'm thinking of either getting the LG G4 on WindTAB or OPO/Zenfone.

Anyone have any suggestions for Wind-compatible phones?

$280 tax in, and if I bring it over to Wind, their BYOP service gives me $150 in add-on credits.

So for 15 months for $40 tax in, I get pretty much unlimited everything (throttled data after 4GB) which is going to save me about $23 dollars per month compared to Rogers.

My plan with Rogers was nice for $63 - 350 minutes/unlimited text and picture messaging/6GB data/VM/CID - but I'm looking to cut some monthly costs down and I don't use my phone as much as I do these days.

Seems like they will handle porting my number over from Rogers as well.
On mobile so I don't have the luxury of scrolling up and double checking your questions but....

Used a galaxy nexus. Only recently switched to a one plus one.
Speed test indicates an average of 3.5ish maps down with about 1mbps up.
Given a lucky day I've had over 5mbps down.
When they throttle, it feels like edge speeds. So barely 1mbps down if at that. It's still fine for stuff like whatsapp chat but forget about browsing social media and what not. That's not gonna happen.

Do the trial period before you go full blown into the switch. It works for some, it doesn't for others. Works great for me. Rarely any issues with reception. Been with for 3.5 years now.

They can set a temporary number for you while you do the trial, and if you give it the green light, then they can port your number for you.

I can't remember what else you may have said, and I'm barely on rs anymore, so good luck friend.

Definitely do the trial. You lose reception inside buildings in some parts of Surrey and langley/Abby. Sometimes sending pics through text could be a pain in the ass. I once had to work in Surrey and left my keys in the trunk. Had no reception and phone kept going into emergency calls instead of roaming. Was fucking stranded.

Wind just got a bunch of spectrum.. if they were smart and used it or most of it towards their HSPA+ network, you could see major improvements...

if they were stupid and used it all towards LTE, then they would have 2 unbearable networks.. lol...

I dnt know but if I still was with Wind, I would rather have a stable 3G HSPA network that works in MORE areas then one that doesnt work in a lot of places...

A smart carrier will put that spectrum towards LTE - it is capable of so much more in terms of carrying voice and data traffic. LTE itself is much more efficient when it comes to utilization and deployment of resources (both physical and logical.) Once you set up an LTE network along with an IMS network for VoLTE, you're golden.

3G/4G UMTS HSPA was only a temporary means for carriers to move from GSM (2G) to LTE. The operational costs of UMTS are far too tremendous and a serious financial burden.

Signed up for two lines for my parents today.

Got the Moto E and for a budget $150 phone, it's very fast and smooth. I like the rubberized sides and back, and the camera is pretty decent. I think my mom will like it.

For my dad, I got him the Alcatel D3 for my dad. For about $40 more, the Moto E feels like a much better choice overall, but my dad only uses his phone for voice (he's 65 and retired) and it seems like it'll fit the bill.

Since the beginning of Wind, its biggest criticisms were poor network reception and slow data speeds. So after using Wind for the past two weeks, I've come to the conclusion that depending on your usage patterns, switching to Wind will either be an excellent choice or a regret.

Reception - I get around 0-2 bars in my house depending on where I am. Since I'm constantly connected to WiFi at home and barely make voice calls, this doesn't really bother me. My cousin that lives in the same neighbourhood gets full bars constantly, so I would assume I'm on the edge of a nearby tower. For all the other areas in Vancouver, reception is generally excellent. I get full bars downtown in my girlfriend's apartment.

Data - The main applications that I use on my smartphone are Whatsapp/KakaoTalk and Chrome to browse the internet, reddit, whatever. For these purposes, the data speeds on Wind are more than sufficient and the slower speeds have no significant impact. I barely stream videos, but I would imagine YouTube would play just fine.

Coming from Rogers, I definitely notice a downgrade overall. Reception at my house is poor, and data speeds are indeed slower. But the fact that I'm shaving almost 50% of my previous phone bill makes it all worth it. I don't need to be constantly connected, but when I do need to be, I've haven't ran into any problems either.

The only issue that I currently have with Wind is the way their network handles data connections. As someone else pointed out to me, fast dormancy on their network is disabled or not functioning properly. When the phone switches from HSPA+ to HSPA/3G to save battery, the connection is dropped completely. This makes games such as Hearthstone practically unplayable since it needs a constant connection or else you'll keep getting disconnects/reconnects. Took me a while to figure out what was happening.

But in the end, with Wind acquiring more spectrum, I'm sure that things can only be better from here on out. I read that network improvements in the past couple of years were slow due to the uncertainty of Wind being sold or not, but as of right now, with more towers coming up and LTE in the works, I feel like it's a good time to have switched over from Rogers.

^This

It wasn't for me, 0 bars in my office and in my house, was almost unusable for me and I was looking forward to switching from a major carrier. If you get reception where you use it most then I'd say go for it but try it.

It's the Manitoba/Sask plan from Koodo

Koodo - $55 unlimited Canada-wide talk & text /5GB data - MB and SK only - Page 2 - RedFlagDeals.com Forums

Out of curiosity, how did you get it set up and were there options for a phone?

i didn't look into options with a phone but i assume the thread on the HoFo forums might be of help.

i got it set up following the steps outlined by many people. the best step by step guide was here. did it at a bestbuy mobile and initially got the $30 plan but switched it to the $48 after the billing cycle changed over.

I just switched to Wind a week ago and less than satisfied. One bar of reception out in East Vancouver. When I was down in Richmond, (near Knight and Westminster) I get zero reception. Data connection drops a lot. For some reason, on my S6, after a restart, it comes back as roaming and stays that way for about 20 minutes before switching back to 4G. Data is unusable (unless I enable roaming) until it switches to 4G.

Got fed up with it and switched to Fido which doesn't seem to have this issue. While Wind has attractive plans, the coverage still isn't where it should be. Hopefully they'll do something with the new spectrum they acquired.

Starting Q1 2016, Wind will see some changes. Rogers has until the end of the year to migrate all Mobilicity users. Wind will take 50% of Mobilicity towers with many in the dead-zones of Wind such as SE Marine Drive.

That day cannot come any sooner. I used to get 2-3 bars in my kitchen on the main floor. Now I get zero and it constantly roams. What a joke!

On the 10th, Wind will be offering a back-to-school promotion.

It's basically the $45 smartphone plan discounted to $39.

Unlimited Canada/US calling
Unlimited global texting
Unlimited data (5GB full speed)
World Saver Talk and Text (discounted international calling)
World Traveller (discounted roaming rates)
VM/CID/etc

I'm not too sure what Rogers will be doing with Mobilicity to be honest. If I were to take a guess, Rogers will migrate all Mobilicity customers to the Rogers network and grandfather their plans to a certain extent. I could see them capping the data on the unlimited plans.

All I know for certain is that Rogers won't simply let Mobilicity customers walk away to Wind with their smartphones.

Should I port my number from fido to mobilicity then? I'm very tempted.... I'm paying over $100 every month because I keep going over my data!

I'm not too concerned with voice as long as the network for data is decent since I have a work phone to make calls with

really interested in the koodo plan if they can port our current numbers over the MB/SK number network
would it have to be the exact same name too? my dads name is under the non koodo account, i was hoping to port that over my new acc if i were to try it
nvm i looked into it -

which store did you go to ? i've tried calling in a few places and it looks like they don't give you manitoba numbers outside of province unless you are living there
