I don't follow the FMA manga, but FMA:Brotherhood was miles better than the first one. The beginning 10 episodes or so are quite similar though. But don't let that fool you, the story line gets so good afterwards.

the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime series changed the story line to something completely different because it had caught up to the manga. so they decided to make something up entirely different. that goes the same for the movie that followed up, "the conquerer of Shamballa".

the new FMA:Brotherhood completely follows the manga to the end. in fact, the broadcasting of the final episode of that series was only a few weeks after the final manga chapter was printed!

one series no one has mentioned was Tengen Toppan Gurren Lagaan
a great series by Gainax.

I am also a big One Piece fan myself. I discovered this anime on a whim when I used to buy pirated Anime DVDs from HK at the small shady DVD shops around Richmond. at first, the series seemed somewhat childish but the action was always there. now, the storylines and characters have really blossomed into something really great, and it definitely shows why it is immensely popular in Japan.

edit: oh yeah, and since this is REVscene, we all have to suggest Initial D!

Guys, hands down one of the best animes out right now is Fairy Tail.
I'm so addicted to it,
the new prince of tennis isn't too bad either.
Also really enjoying Mirai Nikki

what's with all of this revamping of anime series anyways? it seems like in the past 4-5 years, there has been a big decline in entertaining anime series. especially those in the action/adventure genre. the anime industry is going through a dryspell like hollywood?

I'm not an Anime guy, but I personally recommend Vampire Knight & FMA Brotherhood. Well those were the only 2 I've actually watched
Vampire Knight was real good ... great mix of romance & horror. Maintained an ominous atmosphere throughout the seasons
Sad that season 3 never came out

+1 on Code Geass. Insanely good anime. If you like animes that get you thinking then this is the one. It's highly rated on anidb for a reason.

Besides some of the already mentioned animes, check out:

Gungrave - good action, great story, at first it's very mafia like so it's fucking awesome

Black Lagoon - about gangs and pirates (not the Jack Sparrow kind)

Nana - similar to Beck but with more emphasis on the lives and personalities of the characters. It's deep and if you have patience, you get very attached to the characters.

From those three, in terms of time required to watch the series and it's ability to get you hooked
Nana > Gungrave > Black Lagoon. I guarantee you'll enjoy Gungrave but if you got it in you, definitely check out Nana. Black Lagoon is if you want some good shoot 'em up yet a pretty decent story line (decent as in better than a vast majority of the animes out there. All 3 of these once again highly rated on anidb.

Wow.. i haven't watched naruto in ages... too many fillers and have learned the appreciate manga !!

Other favourite animes would be..
- Capeta (probably one of my favourites... was looking for the DVD but can't find it)
- Initial D .. PUAHAHAHHAHAA
- Nodame Cantabile
- Yakitate! JAPAN !!
- Claymore

Can anyone recommend me a short anime series.. maybe about 30-60 episodes long ??? please no DBZ and Naruto type ones.. that never END .... EVER...

Monster is pretty good. Though the journey was more interesting than the ending, which gets kinda messed up.
If you're not picky about art style, give Kaiji a try, it's a cross between Death Note/Liar Game/Akagi(same writer). One of my personal favs. but I'm a sucker for psychological/thriller/drama type stories.

Vampire Knight is more for girls if you're into shoujo stuff (yes, practically one girl with guys fighting over her). But manga > anime. The anime is very lacking, Studio Deen butchers anything it touches.
If you do like shoujo stuff, Skip Beat, Itazura na Kiss, Kimi ni Todoke, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, are some solid choices. But shoujo series end in the middle of no where, while the manga is still continuing...only Itazura na Kiss has its true ending in the anime.

If you like silly gag style stuff that's short, check out Arakawa Under the Bridge, there's only 2 seasons. It's comedy/romance and really easy to watch since it's made from 4 panel comics.

Some romance/drama stuff (grab some tissues, haha) -> ef - a tale of memories/melodies, myself;yourself, clannad, air, kannon, angel beats!, 5cm per second.

If you got time, try to look for the old Hunter X Hunter imo one of my favourites. They have been remaking a new version of Hunter X Hunter but it isn't as great.

I recently had the urge to rewatch Gundam Wing too haha

I would mention more but there's already a decent list of good anime's mentioned by other guys here already

I noticed quite a few recommendations were adaptations of visual novels. Off topic a bit here, but would OP or anyone be interested in some VN recommendations and doing a little reading? A couple Ive read already have sucked me in more than a lot of past anime I watched, and theyre nowhere near tl;dr.

Kind of old school, but Lodoss War is really good if you like medieval dungeons and dragons type of thing. It's only 13 episodes.

I remember having MPC when it was worse than VLC, but I guess that changed now. However, I'm VERY surprised that Fist of the North Star hasn't been mentioned yet. It's an absolute classic!

Anyways, I can recommend just one VN for the uninitiated, even if it's not for everyone: Katawa Shoujo. Started from the ground up by a team of developers that organized on 4chan (of all places) using concept art from another VN, this one garnered a TON of hype when it came out last month after 5 years in the making.

The gist of the storyline is that your character gets diagnosed with arrhythmia after having a heart attack and ends up in a school for the physically disabled. A lot of people went into it thinking "hurr durr time to fuck cripple chicks" (including myself), but nope, not even close.

For a homebrew game, it's VERY well written, the art is well done (see my display pic for a sample, she's one of the characters/potential GFs), and even the H-Scenes are surprisingly tasteful. The emotions this VN provokes has changed peoples' outlooks on life after I checked out 4chan threads regarding the VN, and it has caused me personally to start getting myself in order a bit, so I started morning runs and eating better. Best of all, it's 100% free to download, so there's no messing around with translation patches, etc. Definitely recommend if anyone wants a break from anime since it does have a mix of comedy and drama.

So I decided to watch [C] Money of soul... for my first anime and just finished watching it... they had a great idea but they only had 11 episodes to develop it the writers didnt have the skill to do that..

could have been great but nope 4/10 if i was being picky to 6/10 if i was being generous

side note I DIDNT KNOW THEY MADE A NEW LAST EXILE!!!! I loved the first one cant wait to see this

Death Notes next hopefully it doesnt disappoint

SIDE note VLC 2.0 is out now and it plays the anime files that would only play on MPC

Excellent horror anime.
Thanked. Started a bit slowly but is picking when they start giving away the plot little by little on episode 3 and further. With what they gave away with the plot so far, the premise sounds really interesting.
