Nokia 808 PureView ushers in a revolution in smartphone imaging

Nokia sets a new industry standard with the first in a range of high end experiences based on exclusive Nokia PureView imaging technologies.

Barcelona, Spain - Nokia today ushered in a new era in high-end smartphone imaging with the Nokia 808 PureView. This is the first smartphone to feature Nokia PureView imaging technologies, bringing together high resolution sensors, exclusive Carl Zeiss optics and Nokia developed algorithms, which will support new high-end imaging experiences for future Nokia products.

The Nokia 808 PureView features a large, high-resolution 41 megapixel sensor with high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology. At standard resolutions (2/3, 5 and 8 megapixels) this means the ability to zoom without loss of clarity and capture seven pixels of information, condensing into one pixel for the sharpest images imaginable. At high-resolution (38 megapixel maximum) it means the ability to capture an image, then zoom, reframe, crop and resize afterwards to expose previously unseen levels of details. With superior low-light performance and the ability to save in compact file sizes for sharing in email, MMS, and on social networks, the Nokia 808 PureView makes it possible for anyone to capture professional looking images in any conditions.

In addition to superior still imaging technology, the Nokia 808 PureView, also includes full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom and the world's first use of Nokia Rich Recording. Rich Recording enables audio recording at CD-like levels of quality, previously only possible with external microphones. The Nokia 808 PureView also features exclusive Dolby Headphone technology, transforming stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback.

"Nokia PureView imaging technology sets a new industry standard by whatever measure you use," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. "People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor, but the real quantum leap is how the pixels are used to deliver breath-taking image quality at any resolution and the freedom it provides to choose the story you want to tell."

A 1" sensor would be insane on a cel phone. Not sure how well that will work on such a small device.

shenmecar 02-21-2012 03:27 PM

sweet jesus

twitchyzero 02-21-2012 03:54 PM

n95 was dual-core? :suspicious:

i was more concerned about how the 40ish mpx (41 supposedly) would work even on a 1" sensor

the N8s sensor is 1/1.83" and i think its fantastic i dont have the skill to properly utilize its camera so hopefully as with the N8 the quality/usefullness will be intense

side note there are rumors that there will be a Windows Phone alternative but it seems more like wishful thinking based on what Elop has said and some credible insiders have noted

but i guess we'll see

!MiKrofT 02-22-2012 01:36 AM

I'm sure the megapixels are an exaggeration done through some sort of interpolation. There's no way that nokia would have cutting edge sensor technology exceeding that of the photography world.

If it was, that was a pretty slow phone. :D

FerrariEnzo 02-22-2012 05:23 AM

If the 3rd party support is larger, then it could give Android and iOS a run for the money, but sadly it didnt really take off...

StylinRed 02-22-2012 07:28 AM

^^^^ Nokia didnt really start pushing its App Store until the 2nd half of the 2010 and it got up to 60k+ apps before Elop announced the death of Symbian... its still grown to well over 100,000 apps though but its somewhat fragmented -_-

lol yeah it had 2 cores + a GPU: N95: OMAP2420 - 330 MHz ARM1136 + 220 MHz C55x DSP + PowerVR MBX GPU
guess you could call it a fake dual core.. dual cpu anyhow ;)

Im not saying that the Nokia app store is bad, but Android and iOS gets 60k+ apps a day.. people just build useless crap any put it.... sometimes theres a good one in the bunch...

and now that Nokia is going to roll out Windows Phone OS, why get a Symbian OS phone? how is the support for it going to be?

StylinRed 02-22-2012 03:02 PM

ah i see what you're saying

but symbian is still Nokias bread and butter and they'll be supporting it with updates until at least 2016/17 and not just minor maintenance updates but full fledged OS revisions

Carla supposedly by the middle or end of the year and Donna for 2013-14 (dont know what else is down the pipeline from there but theres still a few years after that based on Nokias own timeline)

and if WP fails, chances are still high for that, they'll have to update/maintain Symbian even longer than that

but at the rate people switch phones these days they wouldnt have anything to worry about and for those who hold onto their devices they've got 4years at the very least

Elop really fucked up with his announcement last year -_-

AVS_Racing 02-22-2012 04:40 PM

is anyone even using the N9??? it was quite hyped up and it seems things died down and everyone just stuck with iphones or galaxys. I wanted to pick one up at first but I picked up a S2X and didn't feel like dropping another 600 for the N9

bcrdukes and a couple others have an N9 the thing is Nokia wont officially release it in North America as they dont want it to interfere with the Lumias

AVS_Racing 02-22-2012 09:12 PM

yea I tired to look if any carriers were selling the N9 and I was surprised to find no one had them.

bcrdukes 02-22-2012 09:23 PM

I bought mine from Newegg.com in Los Angeles.

asian_XL 02-24-2012 03:02 AM

Belle is promising, but it still has a lot of space for improvement.

While on the topic of Nokia, there was a study stating that Nokia phones are the highest drivers of Internet/data usage globally followed by iPhones and RIM.

Nokia leads on mobile Internet traffic – Nokia Conversations : the official Nokia blog

StylinRed 02-24-2012 03:48 PM

yep but that makes sense considering they're still the largest mobile manufacturer in the world and the install base is in the hundreds & hundreds of millions

that's why they have that "next billion" campaign

oddly though even with news like this the App Store isn't booooming with apps and, a bit more relevant to the store, the developers make more money on the Nokia App Store (mainly because theres so many fart apps on other platforms) and there are over 13million downloads a day!

-_- Elops announcement really scared away the developers that were coming on board

StylinRed 02-26-2012 03:48 PM

For anyone that wants to watch a live feed of the Nokia presentation @ MWC

here's the link Mobile World Congress 2012 webcast - Nokia - Nokia.com

it starts tonight @ 11:30pm

this presentation will introduce PureView and new Symbian & Windows Phone devices etc (supposedly a budget Tango device)
