gps is legal but i think its illegal to use ur phone as gps. Maybe buy one of those stands for ur iphone and stick it on the dashboard and tell them ur using it as ur gps. LOL

for my car's built-in gps system, it wont allow me to operate the gps (input address, etc) while car is moving, it makes me pull over before it unlocks the gps system.

From my understanding GPS is legal to use, you just cant program it (entering designation) when driving.

no handheld devices. if your using your phone as gps then it has to be mounted or somewhere secure and your destination needs to be pre set.

You can use your phone as GPS but you can't be poking it or touching it at all... Same for iPods etc.

Can any one confirm the legality of this?

What if it was just an incoming SMS. You looked down to read it...but didn't reply?

If you weren't actually talking on the phone, then show them the call log otherwise get the ticket..

Don't need to be replying, touching your phone = illegal.

The above two answers are correct, for Class 5 and above.
I think the new system prohibit ANY kind of electronic for Class 7L/N, whether it's mounted or not.

GPS is legal to use but u cant be adjusting or touching it while driving. So set the address while in your driveway and leave it alone until you reach your destination or get off the roadway. Its like the navigation units that come in cars where once your in motion you can't adjust the address or fiddle around with it.

edit* ^ they beat me to it

For Class 7 (Novice Drivers)
Cellphone and driver distraction
Restricted from using both hand-held and hands-free cellphones and portable electronic devices while driving or riding. The GLP hands-free restriction is lifted for riding if no valid class 7 or 7L licence is held.

... huh. Im a class 7. I tend to use my GPS built-in system in my car to get around to places. So that's illegal?

Your built-in GPS system isn't a portable electronic.

but i need to toggle between map mode and directions mode!

anyway, the whole law is stupid imo
the law isn't going to deter people from using their phone while driving, it'll only make them try to hide it or obscure it, further increasing the chance of an accident occuring (ie. instead of txting in plain sight, they'll text in a lower down position, drawing their eyes further from where their vision needs to be)

i've yet to hear a shred of evidence that a ban on using electronic devices decreases accident rates in a city overall and it all just seems like a political ploy to win votes... a "look! we're doing something to make roads safer" move, when in fact it doesn't help shit

friend got in an accident a year ago, just a fender bender but cops came anyways, first thing the officer did apparently was request to see both driver's phone to check their most recent incoming or outgoing calls

they both just gave out their phone after the request without hesitation.. just caught totally off guard about it

^ but if the cop wasn't at the scene of the accident. And say the car iss equipped with a bluetooth device....wouldn't it be hard to proof whether it was in used or not? It's just gonna be one's word against another...

The guy in the grey Mazda3 from 00:07 to 00:33 they focused on at the beginning at this clip.
Then look at 01:17-01:22, he actually got away with it....

But instead, random ones like silver Passat, and white MR2 got pulled in....maybe no seatbelts?

I'm fine with getting people if they're using their phone when they're driving, but getting people while they're stopped at a light makes the police seem like such cocksuckers.

Not for commercial use so they don't need one.

I could take a picture of anyone right up in their face if I wanted to in a public place, which is why whenever anyone tells you you aren't allowed to film them and they're in public, well, they're bullshitting you.

I agree since the worst that could happen is that you miss the green and delay 5 seconds before someone honks you but I guess it's difficult to make that distinction.

Are there any studies to show that this law has reduced traffic accidents? Personally, I somehow doubt that they've gone down. People that want to use their phone while driving aren't exactly going to stop. They'll just be sneakier about it but now instead of looking at their phone held up to eye level where they can still see the road, they're looking downward at their crotch instead.
