GLOW 11-15-2012 01:48 PM

Drow 11-15-2012 06:20 PM

Well if you are eligible to upgrade to the MBNA World Card I would say you can consider. It's basically the same cash back card but you get another 6 months of 5% gas and groceries and you don't have the $1200 limit.

Sentinel 11-15-2012 08:58 PM

Right now I have a BMO cashback card. I want to get the BMO Gold Airmiles. Can I just call BMO and tell them I want to switch or do I have to cancel my current card then apply for the gold one? Anybody know?

you can just call them and switch.

J-Chow 11-17-2012 01:11 PM

Lol, wait. There's a difference between the regular MBNA smart cash back vs MBNA smart cash back world??

chunk_stir 11-17-2012 01:20 PM

Just applied for this one after finding out about MBNA smartcash changes:
Aspire Travel Rewards Credit Card - Apply | Capital One Canada

Seems pretty good. Wrks out to 2% cashback in reward travel, or 1.5% in cash rebate.

twdm 11-17-2012 10:41 PM

Currently using the AMEX Plat:

1.25 Amex points on the dollar flat
$699 annual fee
60000 Amex points in points after 3k spend in first 3 months (using referral link from plat cardholder) - Can transfer to aeroplan or other airline points (or $600 travel credit)
$200 Annual Travel credit when booking through Platinum Concierge (refreshes in January, so if you apply and get approved now, you can claim $200 this year, and $200 starting in January)
Priority Club Prestige membership ($399 value, unlimited airport lounge access for 2 people)
Complimentary Airport lounge access with AMEX partners
All the bells and whistles in terms of insurance.
Premium Membership in certain hotels and airlines (Cathay Marco Polo Gold, SPG gold, etc)

The travel credit alone already gives you $400 value along with $600 worth in points (minimum), unlimited airport lounge access, and the premium memberships makes this card a clear winner.

Referrals can only come from current plat users so you will have to find someone who can send you the referral link.

Not sure if you're indirectly hinting RS members to PM you for referral or what....but it's actually:
Quote:

Earn 50,000 Bonus Membership RewardsŪ points by making $1,000 in purchases in the first three months of Cardmembership.1
and then
Quote:

As a Cardmember, you11 can refer a friend and earn a referral bonus of 15,000 bonus Membership RewardsŪ points for each approved
Sure the card sound attractive for it's value in it's first year (like every other card out there....)
But what about the year after? :fuckthatshit:

Edit:
$699 annual fee - $200 annual travel credit
= $500
10 Membership Rewards = $1 travel credit
= Need to accumulate 50,000 Membership Rewards
1.25 Membership Rewards = $1 spent on your Amex
= You would have to spend at least $40,000 annually on this card to be able to enjoy all the bells and whistle of this card's "benefits"

If you normally spend that much on Amex annually on top of your other Visa/MC's then
But for the other 85%+ of RS's population.... :fuckthatshit:

Nocardia 11-18-2012 12:18 AM

Yeah looks like its time to switch away from the smart cash card....

Damn, it was so easy to choose this card, now its a clusterfuck.

Regular smart cash got nerfed worse than World. For regular there is now a $1,250 limit on spending per month, and that $1,250 includes gas/groceries. ie. it's 1% cash back on all purchases up to $1,250, plus an additional 1% on the first $400 of purchases that are classified under gas/groceries. Meanwhile, the world version has no $1,250 limit.

It's 60000 points through the referral link. (lmgtfy: https://www.americanexpress.com/cana...d=platinumCard). Learn to read. The value of the card comes from its extra benefits. If you plan to travel at least once a year, it pays for itself. It's not for everyone, but you can easily make it worth it and churn the sign up bonuses every year.

Not really racist! 11-18-2012 11:35 AM

I switched to the world to get my 5% for the next 6 months. Will look into another card once that's up. Damn you MNBA, the smart cash was the best card out there IMO

shenmecar 11-19-2012 12:50 PM

stupid ass mbna. hate it now.

carisear 11-19-2012 01:26 PM

So anyone know what the best free card is out there now? I put on average $15-$20k a year on it. MBNA smartcash just doesn't cut it for me anymore.

Oleophobic 11-19-2012 11:49 PM

MBNA Rewards Travel 2% cash back card

Although MBNA no longer allows anyone to be converted to this card, some people on RFD have had success in getting this card through signing up for the MBNA Rewards 1% cash back card. I'm not sure if it's because they met certain income requirements or whatever criteria MBNA uses but some people ended up getting the 2% card in the mail.

If anyone plans on attempting this remember to apply through a certain site for a rebate.

XplicitLuder 04-10-2013 10:47 PM

sorry to bump an old thread, but rather not make a new one. Im currently with Scotiabank and i have the SCENE Visa card, but i find that i have no need for it anymore. Gf and i have stopped going to the movies as much , which was why i got it in the first place to save me the 50-80$ a month lol

anyone with Scotia care to share what cc you have and why did you go with it? Not too sure as to what i want...i got a pamphlet from them with the AMEX and the other cards they have and not too sure what to switch too

trancehead 04-10-2013 11:37 PM

dont know if its been mentioned already, but AMAZON.ca has a no foreign exchange transaction fee card. I think for most cards, they tack on an extra 2-3% on all foreign exchanges...which add up fast

other than that, its rewards systems etc are nothing spectacular. its free anyways.

go on amazon.com and its advertised there (not advertised on .ca lol)
