just finished school and started working in the "real world." Thinking of switching from my free RBC rewards card to something that provides better rewards. Currently considering the Amex gold rewards card.

Would use the card for virtually everything, shopping, gas, food, etc.
I would also be using it a significant amount for gas from across the border since I live near the border. I also fly/travel about once a year for vacation.

First question, would amex be a good idea for the above? Better options?

Second question, i would have retain a visa as well since amex won't be accepted universally. Should I keep the RBC rewards card for that? better options? cash back card?

Apply for the timmy's CIBC Visa. Since I go there literally every few days I guess is a good idea to earn points for my breakfast.

Although I am on my 3rd replacement already. Their card is super cheap is not even hard lol. And their chip always seem to fail after a few months. After many complains I was able to get $20 credit to spend on Timmys.

Depends if you're willing to pay for Amex's $120 annual fee beyond's its first year free.

Have you looked into the CapitalOne Aspire travel?

It (iirc) doesn't have the annual 10k anniversary points anymore. But if you're willing to pay for Amex Gold's $120 annual fee, might as well pay for this one where it will be accepted at more places.

The MBNA World Elite card also give 2% cashback on everything.
First year free + $89/yr after. 10k points after first purchase. (Worth $200)

been lookin into cc lately and heres what i found, u either stick with a cash back card, or a travel rewards card, theres none thats best of both worlds

for cash back cards, right now it seems like the scotia momemtum visa INFINITE card is the best out there in terms of cash back rewards. 4% back for gas and grocery stores, 2% drug store and recurring bills like cell phone bills, and 1 % all else. it does cost $99 each year and need min income of 60K to get this card. best thing is u can use this card to buy for example best buy or home depot gift cards at grocery stores to milk that 4% instead of 1% directly at best buy/home depot.

for travel rewards card the best ones out there currently are the BMO world elite master card and CapOne Aspire travel MC.

all these cc trump over amex solely becuase not every place accepts amex. oh beware tho as i read scotia and capone are both very anal about meeting personal income and credit rating. i myself went with the momentum visa infinite

What's a good MasterCard to apply now a days?

My current line up consists of Amazon Visa (not used unless it's foreign shopping), MBNA SmartCash MasterCard (occupied with a balance transfer), and a CIBC Gold Aventura Visa (the one that gets used the most)

Reason I need another MasterCard is there's always the odd time I'll be shopping at No Frills or The Independent Grocer which they only accept debit and MasterCard only.

what's a good secured visa to apply for?

If you qualify, the Tangerine Mastercard is excellent for cash back - https://www.tangerine.ca/en/spending...ard/index.html

Choose two different categories for 2% cashback while the rest are 1%. No annual fee.

If you are using it to buy things from Loblaw's chain of grocery stores, you mind as well use their PC card.

I got the pc mastercard world elite, no annual fee

always shop at superstore , might as well add up the points.

Chronix 02-24-2016 06:37 PM

So MBNA called me and it was really shady. They encouraged me to take out my remaining credit from my credit card and use it for other expenses and bills while offering a lower interest rate for the next 10 months in repaying it.

Da fuck

yup, PC World Elite Mastercard, ftw!

no fee, lots of free points. I use it everywhere. More points if you shop at a Loblaws store.

You need to earn x number of dollars to qualify. I think it's total household income.

For US purchases, I use the Amazon Visa 'cause no transaction/conversion fee. For Costco US, I use Amex Platinum. I'll have to check that one over again since Amex is no longer tied to Costco Canada.

for anyone wondering, i ended up applying for a capital one secured mastercard. Got approved with a 75 dollar deposit. Was expecting a 300 dollar limit, and ended up with 2k.

the fuck.

BMO world elite master card

For proprietary travel. Their concierge is awesome.

It's a black card too which is sick.

F3 05-13-2016 10:03 PM

Wondering if anyone knows of a us dollar card that doesn't have an annual fee?

Ch28 05-13-2016 10:59 PM

I think the Amazon Chase Visa card is a no annual fee USD card. You'll need to look into it.

The Amazon Chase Visa is a CAD credit card with no foreign currency transaction fee, also no annual fee. It is a great alternative to a USD credit card. I believe there are no USD credit card without annual fee. The BMO one will waive the fee if you spend something like $1500 a year. The TD one will waive the fee if you put something like $5000 US in a US savings and have the all inclusive banking plan. You can look into the exact details on their respective sites.

BMO US card bills in US so theres no conversion or bs transaction fee. Theres I think an annual $30 fee but its waived if you spend 1000 in a year which is pretty doable.

jeedee 05-14-2016 12:55 PM

Amazon visa card takes fuking forever to mail you a physical card :smug:

XplicitLuder 05-14-2016 01:06 PM

PC Mastercard for every single purchase. While I fill up gas at esso, I also get points for using it there.

MBNA Smart castback mainly for the 0.99% balance transfer for 1 year.

You can only use so much, might as well focus on purchases on one card rather than travel points here, cash back there, etc. etc.

winson604 05-20-2016 06:29 PM

Still rockin the Capital One Aspire and going strong and since they grandfathered my card I still get $100 in points every year.

jeedee 05-22-2016 10:12 PM

anyone else use Amazon Visa card/cashback cards for everyday transactions (groceries, gas etc) other than online shopping?
