But yeah its pretty fast and will probably outrun an entry level sport bike at city speeds

Oh, what I ment was if you know of anyone who has bought one who can let me try it or if not let me know how it's like to own it. (Kinda like the optibike ambassador program). I ship commercial stuff all the time so buying it & getting it over is not the issue.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Oh haha no worries, I actually don't know anyone who has one right now, the one I tried out has been sold. The only weird thing about the bike is the weight/weight distribution, it's heavy and all the weight is in the back, otherwise it's super comfy and quiet.

im kind of late, but i own a 2005 bws.

costs 6 dollars even at these gas prices, hits 65km routinely on my way to work on the flat, and going uphill never dips below 55.

i also live in richmond, and if i want to head into vancouver, oak street is the only way. that or the skytrain foot passenger bridge, but i feel like a jerk heading that way.

either way, the scooter is a blast, and yes, i drive mine rain or shine.

good luch with your search!

wait what the skytrain has a foot bridge?

Incorrect. Anything with a motor, electric or not is required to have valid insurance.

ICBC | Electric bikes

According to ICBC, an electric motor assisted bicycle does not need insurance.
An e-scooter with no pedals does need insurance.

LenovoTurbo 04-05-2012 07:55 PM

What about a bicycle with a 49cc motor installed? Would it consider as a motor assisted bicycle or LSM or it's just plain illegal?

LP700-4 04-05-2012 09:58 PM

^Plain illegal. Don't ask how i know

That's what I was referring to. An e-scooter. Because that's what was linked. :rukidding:

These have pedals, and are thus pedal assisted, and are completely legal to drive on public roads.

Fi2e 04-07-2012 10:33 AM

ruckus are slower. get a 2 stroke if u wanna go "faster". but who gets a scooter to go fast? :fulloffuck:

Didnt want to bump the thread, but i searched all over rs and bcsb and still coudnt find the answer.

Can you ride a 50cc scooter around the city unsupervised without any motorcycle license and only a learner's license (7L)?

So many different answers in each of the threads i looked through :fulloffuck:

You must have a driver’s licence of any class. You can not operate on a learner’s licence other than a Class 6 or 8 motorcycle learner’s licence.
Need at least a N.

LP700-4 05-06-2012 09:51 AM

What if I go out and take my motorcycle knowledge test ? Would I have to follow the same rules as motorcycles? Ex. No riding before sunrise and after sunset.

falcon 05-06-2012 10:14 AM

no, not for the scooter. only if you were on a motorcycle.

So do people who drive their 50cc scooters usually take this route into/out of Richmond? I wouldn't feel safe on any of the normal bridges but if this foot bridge is actually a viable option, I'd strongly consider getting one for my summer commutes.

LP700-4 05-06-2012 08:46 PM

The foot bridge is usually only people and bicycles. I've only seen 1 gas powered scooter cross the bridge. Other times its usually only electric powered bikes

If you don't feel comfortable riding over a bridge with a 60kph limit, don't buy a scooter. You'll be a hazard to everyone.

d1 05-07-2012 07:42 PM

So are you speaking from experience that it's fine? Oak might have a 60km/h speed limit but people are still driving over it at 80km/h+ while some 50cc's top out at 5x km/h.

RabidRat 05-07-2012 08:42 PM

I have to ask - what is so appealing about riding a scooter? Is it really so much cheaper on gas than a motorcycle that it justifies topping out at 60kph? It doesn't seem any safer either, I would think the biggest danger is still other drivers not seeing you and taking you out.

Edit: Actually I would think it's even more dangerous as people on scooters don't seem to wear any sort of gear at all. So you'd get even more fucked if a car ran you over =p

Given that this is a car forum, I am assuming you drive a car. In case you didn't notice, nearly everyone goes 20kph over the limit... everywhere. So if you're scared of 80kph on the Oak St. bridge, you'll be scared everywhere. Just saying.

Yeah, and I am somewhat speaking from experience. I've been riding motorcycles for 7 years and scooters, when driven correctly in a proper manner, are fun, cheap and safe. Nothing bothers me more than driving down a street with some tool on a 50cc scooter going 20kph with the throttle half open, hugging the sidewalk. Either drive IN traffic the way you're supposed to or GTFO the road.

Insurance is one of the big factors, scooter itself is also dirt cheap. Gas is supposed to be something crazy cheap like $5 per 150kms or so.

Speaking for myself, im still in HS, and a big motorcycle costing 3-4k along with 2-3k insurance is just out of what people would call reasonable.

I did look into some big bikes like an R6 or GSXR but didnt want it to kill me till later in life :fullofwin:
