A beast of a fish reported in Burnaby; biologists concerned
Snakehead fish can move across land, eat small mammals

BURNABY (NEWS1130) - It's something right out of a horror movie and it could be in a Burnaby park. The snakehead fish can grow up to a metre long, can move across land and with its sharp teeth, can eat small mammals.

Biologists are concerned for the eco-system around the lagoon in Central Park.

"They're an impressive beast," says Jonathan Moore, assistant professor of biology at SFU. But he's quick to point out the sightings are so far unconfirmed by park officials.

Should they turn up, Moore thinks we need to deal with them. "They can get about a metre long. It's a voracious predator. It eats other fish, amphibians and prey up to a third of its body length."

He doesn't think it would eat your small dog, despite some reports, but rats and other smaller mammals could be devoured.

"Adding a large predator like this can really impact local fish populations," explains Moore. "Places where it has invaded in the US, it's been found to eat a high diversity of fish there. "

Because of its effect on eco-systems south of the border, the US has banned sales of live snakehead fish. That's not the case here in Canada, but Moore would support such a move.

"In Canada, it is illegal to release any aquatic organism into environment without a permit. But that is very difficult to regulate," he notes.

He feels controlling the population is nearly impossible because they reproduce at such a high rate; five times a year, they produce 15,000 eggs. There's only one way to get rid of them.

"The best way is probably a 'sledgehammer approach,' meaning probably having to poison the lake. That's going to kill basically everything in the lake and the basically restocking the lake with the native fish," describes Moore.

He says some American cities have tried draining the water but it proved ineffective. That's because it doesn't need water to survive. One of the scariest aspects of the fish is that they can move out of water and across land. "They can gulp air. They have this primitive lung."

"If it does take off here, which it probably won't... but if it does, where could it spread to?" he asks.

"Lets hope it's not here," says Moore.

Very invasive fish, there won't be any natural predators for this fish. If it can get into the local ecosystem its going to be pretty much impossible to exterminate it.

skyxx 05-16-2012 03:21 PM

If we over-fish it then there won't be a problem.

GLOW 05-16-2012 03:32 PM

i wonder if the coyotes & bobcats and similar predators would hunt them...only one way to find out...

Eradicating populations of invasive species isn't anywhere near that simple.

bears, eagles, badgers (maybe our badger population wont be endangered anymore), cougars, owls, foxes, coyotes, etc

maybe our larger wildlife will be able to flourish :concentrate:

I am 90% certain that when I was a kid, Grandma used to cook this snakehead fish for us as a regional delicacy. Makes for some great soup as well.

Yep, I saw a bunch in the tank today. But they were only about a foot long. Some dickhead probably bought one and released it.

JSALES 05-16-2012 04:09 PM

That's pretty cool. I'd like to see it at central park since I live close by

fd3 05-16-2012 04:10 PM

Silly fish you can't walk on land... Wait. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!? You are not a human! You cannot walk on land! Stop it! Stop being a freak of nature! Someone remove you from the world before you kill all the European squirrels!

freakshow 05-16-2012 04:51 PM

River Monsters had a episode on this.. s02e10

He said they're pretty crazy, but they can't 'walk on land'.. lol. They can survive longer than other fish out of water, but are basically useless and immobilized.

optiblue 05-16-2012 05:20 PM

When I saw this thread, the only thing that went though my mind was "Can we eat this?" If T&T sells this.... RS BBQ meet at Central park?

BaoTurbo 05-16-2012 05:27 PM

Fish walking on land lol

FerrariEnzo 05-16-2012 06:59 PM

lets EAT it

jing 05-16-2012 07:03 PM

Can't remember which state but the Snakehead has become such an invasive species there that they've essentially put a bounty on them. Anyone who can prove that they've killed one gets like a gift card from the government iirc
